Results for Development Institute (R4D) is a nonprofit organization based in Washington, DC. R4D's mission is to bridge the gap between policy analysis and implementation in key areas of social and economic development in low and middle income countries. Since its founding in 2007, R4D has built a track record of successfully implementing projects in health, market dynamics, education, and governance.

R4D offers internships at its headquarters in Washington, D.C. The internship program is designed to provide students and recent graduates with an opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge and training about our programs and projects in developing countries as well as supporting areas of R4D.

Position Description:

The Center for Health Market Innovations (CHMI) promotes programs, policies and practices that make quality health care delivered by private organizations affordable and accessible to the world's poor. Operated through a global network of partners since 2010, CHMI is managed by the Results for Development Institute. CHMI is supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation, and UKAid. Reporting directly to a CHMI team member at R4D and working under her/his guidance, the Intern will play an important role within the CHMI team. Responsibilities will encompass a range of communications and analytic tasks with a focus on supporting the CHMI web platform (www.HealthMarketInnovations.org). Ideally, the position will involve a full or part-time commitment of at least four months (with a possible extension) starting in January 2012 (candidates available sooner should still apply). A stipend will be provided.

Potential tasks and responsibilities may include:

  • Maintain and contribute to CHMI's online database of health market innovations (e.g., draft and review program profiles, ensure accuracy of information, contact implementers to seek more information on specific programs, etc.)
  • Write blog posts on health innovations for the CHMI website and other blogs
  • Disseminating health innovations via social networking
  • Maintain/edit photo and video library
  • Evaluate impact of communications activities
  • Occasionally assist with event preparation
  • Performing other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate for this position will possess the following qualifications:

  • Excellent writing skills and fluency with social media (e.g. blogging)
  • Web content development experience (preferred, but not required)
  • Experience or education in international development, public health, communications, and/or journalism
  • Interest in database/knowledge management
  • High level of organization and detail orientation
  • Ability to set priorities and handle competing time and resource demands
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office software
  • Must have: Enthusiasm, energy, good judgment, and humor
  • Desired but not required: Basic video editing skills for web, Basic Photoshop skills

This model requires entrepreneurial people who exhibit both individual initiative and strong team behaviors.

Eligibility:

Candidates should be college/university undergraduate students with less than 2 years of work experience; or graduate students with less than 2 years of work experience.

Awarding academic credit for an internship is at the discretion of your college or university. We are happy to assist you with providing appropriate information at your school's request. Interns are responsible for making all arrangements for earning credit prior to the commencement of their internship.
