Monitor Inclusive Markets India (www.mim.monitor.com), a social-mission-driven unit of Monitor Group, the global strategy consulting firm, is recruiting to its team based in Mumbai.

Founded in 2006, MIM leverages Monitor’s core consulting capabilities to catalyse market-based solutions to the problems associated with poverty. We believe that greater engagement of the poor at the Bottom of they Pyramid (BoP) in socially beneficial markets is a powerful means of achieving positive social change. In India, our work goes far beyond research and analysis, to working in the field with entrepreneurs, corporate players, investors, government and other stakeholders, in order to stimulate and drive activity in such markets. Notably, we have successfully catalysed market activity in low-income housing to serve the 21 million households earning Rs. 7,500 – 25,000 per month. Our efforts have led to some 50,000 houses (some at prices as low as Rs.3 lakhs) being sold by over 40 developers in 2010-11, and to the growth of housing finance provision for low-income customers, even those in the informal sector.

Whilst we continue to drive market development in low-income housing, our second program in urban water is well underway, and we are actively exploring further opportunities for business models in a range of other sectors. In order to expand our work, we are actively seeking candidates to join our team.

Successful candidates will be joining a small but dynamic team with a global outlook combined with local knowledge and experience. Team members come from a wide variety of backgrounds—from Ivy League and Oxbridge to IIT, urban planning to consulting, commercial startups to microfinance institutions—but all have a strong commitment to and passion for social change.

Job Overview

The CoS will work closely with the Head, MIM India, to enhance his effectiveness externally, within the MIM team (India and global), and across the Monitor Group, a prestigious strategy consulting firm headquartered in Cambridge, Mass. USA.

In addition to his leadership responsibilities on the MIM team in India, the Head is part of the global MIM leadership team and is a Partner of Monitor Group. The Head is the key spokesperson for MIM India and a sought-after expert on key issues of national interest, e.g. low-income housing, market-based solutions to the problems of poverty. The Head is also MIM India’s fundraiser-in-chief.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Support for Head, MIM
    • Join the Head for key meetings or serve as his representative with other colleagues from MIM at meetings with external contacts and record minutes
    • Coordinate follow-up actions and communications after telephone conversations, meetings, and conferences
      1. Ensure material is sent out, meetings are documented, information is shared with appropriate team members
  2. Manage email. Review, prioritize and print out, respond to “standard” emails, get input from the Head on rest and then follow-up.
  3. Assist the Head in preparing for conferences and meetings with requisite presentations, pre read materials, upfront research, etc.
  4. Maintaining a ‘standard’ set of material for use by the entire MIM practice
  5. Mapping and managing networks
  6. Team Coordination
    • Ensure the Head is aware of current priorities for himself and for the team
    • Attend key team meetings, project review meetings and be responsible for recording minutes and following up on to dos
    • Monitor and track deliverables from broader team to the Head, and vice versa
  7. Coordination of Fundraising
    • Assist the Head and the MIM team in researching and identifying potential funders for MIM work
    • Maintain database of funders and relationships
    • Coordinate maintenance of relationships with funders, including performance on reporting and other obligations
    • Support the Head and the broader team in developing proposals and targeting right funders
  8. Experience

    • Undergrad from a top-quality institution, with 4 years work experience or Master with 2 years work ex.
    • Worked in at least one recognized corporate
    • Demonstrated interest in the social space
    • Exposure to emerging markets – preferably to India

    Core Competencies

    • Solid analytic base
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
    • Pragmatic orientation – bias to execution and coordination roles, with a focus on completion.
    • Dynamic organization skills to allow ability to work in fast-changing environment, and a high degree of comfort in such an environment
    • Attention to detail
