Nigeria: New Bakassi Chairman Talks Tough

Calabar – THE newly sworn-in Chairman of the New Bakassi Local Government Area, Dr. Ekpo Bassey has pledged his administration’s commitment to fighting poverty to a stand-still by building capacity of the youths and providing micro-credit to them to boost their businesses.

Bassey who announced his plans in Calabar Monday after being sworn-in as chairman of the New Bakassi Local Government Area by the Cross River State Governor, Senator Liyel Imoke his administration would collaborate with the appropriate agencies to train the youths for capacity building in the vocations of their choices including farming.

The chairman also promised to fast-track the federal and state governments efforts at the resettlement of the displaced people of Bakassi through local facilitation committees as well as beef up security network to protect lives and property in the area.

He gave assurance to the women in the area saying “women will be carried along in all aspects of our developmental programmes as our government is gender friendly”.

Besides, he said his administration would place high premium on the development of the agricultural sector through the identification of agricultural products that are cultivatable in the area and the strengthening of the fishing sector of the riverine communities.
