Rural market, an incredible opportunity: Manwani

Rural India is a powerhouse waiting to emerge and presents an incredible opportunity of potentially adding $1.8 trillion to the Indian economy which is equal to the current GDP, according to Harish Manwani, Chairman, Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL).
Addressing shareholders at the company’s 79 annual meeting, Mr. Manwani spoke about the opportunity presented by rural India in his speech titled “Rural India-an emerging powerhouse’’.
He said that by 2025, the Indian rural market was expected to grow more than ten-fold to become a $100 billion opportunity for retail spending.
He said there were challenges in agriculture, rural employment and employability and human development. “And yet, despite these seemingly insurmountable challenges, there is an incredible opportunity.”
