Billed as Africa’s biggest power and energy expo, Power and Electricity World Africa launched in Sandton on Tuesday, with exhibits from China, India, Europe, the US and further afield displaying renewable and traditional technologies.

After Energy Minister Dipuo Peters called in sick, a senior department official read her opening speech, which said nuclear power would be part of South Africa’s future energy mix.

Barry Worthington, executive director of the US Energy Association, a private organisation representing the North American energy industry, said US President Barack Obama had called on Africa to use all available energy options to spur economic and social development.
