According to the Indian minister of health and family welfare, “various interventions” spearheaded by the country’s government have contributed to a successful reduction in maternal mortality over the last 12 years.

Ghulam Nabi Azad made the comments while chairing a meeting of the Consultative Committee of Parliament attached to his ministry, Press Trust India reported.

Between 2001 and 2003, the country’s maternal mortality rate stood at 301 deaths per 100,000 live births. In the period from 2004 to 2005, it had declined to 254 deaths per 100,000 live births.

The health minister went on to claim that more recent figures from between 2007 and 2009 showed a maternal mortality rate of 212 deaths per 100,000 live births.
