Startup wants West Michigan devices to improve medical care in developing world

Monday, March 31, 2014

Three young entrepreneurs want to leverage the strength of West Michigan’s medical device capabilities to commercialize new products that could help improve care in the developing world.

With two early stage medical device technologies in development, the entrepreneurs are merging Design Innovations for Infants and Mothers Everywhere Inc. (DIIME) of Troy and Chassell, Mich.-based nonprofit CentriCycle Inc. to create Sisu Global Health. The new company will be focused on starting a pipeline to develop and manufacture products in the Grand Rapids area and export them to Ghana and India — and eventually to other areas in need.

Sisu Global Health includes CEO Carolyn Yarina and CMO Katie Kirsch — the principals at CentriCycle — and Chief Technology Officer Gillian Henker — the CEO and managing partner of DIIME. Henker and Yarina knew each other from their days at the University of Michigan engineering school where they worked on projects together and participated in class trips to India. Kirsch joined CentriCycle in 2013.
