Ebola outbreak spreads fear in rural Sierra Leone

Weeks under the strain of bad news, much uncertainty and no direct support are taking a toll on rural towns like Rotifunk, in Bumpeh Chiefdom, the focus of my all-volunteer nonprofit Sherbro Foundation Sierra Leone. Imagine a country with some of the friendliest people on Earth who have stopped shaking hands with, who have stopped touching, friends and colleagues. Everyone is eyeing each other for signs of illness.
Sierra Leone President Ernest Bai Koromahas declared a national emergency and Aug. 4 a national day of prayer and reflection. Everyone was asked to stay home. And they did. It was eerie to see pictures of the normally jammed streets of Freetown, the capital, empty without even a pedestrian in sight.
