IDB SUPPORTS PROJECT TO EXPAND ACCESS TO IRRIGATION FOR SMALL FARMERS IN GUATEMALA

Innovative financing mechanism with affiliate of international leader in corporate social responsibility.
The Inter-American Development Bank will provide $910,000 for a project to expand access to irrigation for small farmers in Guatemala in a joint effort with AMANCO Tubosistemas, an affiliate of the Grupo Nueva business group, an international leader in corporate social responsibility.
The project, which will be sponsored under the IDB?s Social Entrepreneurship Program (PES), aims to install irrigation systems for some 2,200 farmers with plots under five hectares (approximately 12 acres) in departments of Guatemala?s Central and the Occidental Highlands.
Due to their rich volcanic soils and moderate to cold climates, these regions are ideal for growing nontraditional crops, particularly fruits and vegetables for domestic and export markets. However, the absence of rain during six months limits the number of crops farmers can obtain per year.
