South Africa shows interest in India’s Simputer

Wednesday, April 6, 2005

South Africa has shown keen interest in using a no-frills computer developed by Indian scientists, especially for rural development.
Vinay Deshpande, whose company Encore Software developed the Simputer that has revolutionised the use of computers by not so literate people in rural India, was confident the first machines would be in use in South Africa within a month.
The Simputers would be used for applications involving e-governance, education and in small and medium business enterprises.
“The Simputer has had tremendous exposure in South African media, because wherever I have gone, they all know about it,” Deshpande told IANS.
