The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundationnamed Emory Global Health Institute, which houses the U.S. office of the International Association of National Public Health Institutes (IANPHI), its lead partner in its new global health surveillance network aimed at preventing childhood mortality in developing countries.

The Gates Foundation plans to commit up to $75 million to launch the network. The network, called Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance (CHAMPS), will gather data about how, where and why children are getting sick and dying in order to better diagnose, treat and prevent diseases.

CHAMPS is anticipated to be a 20 year project.
