Deep Dive Conversation with Jed Emerson
Ancient Greeks believed in a time before time called the Golden Age, when humanity lived in harmony with the gods; a time when we were truly free, a time to which we must seek a return. Our purpose then, and that of the resources and tools we control, such as capital, is to help us find our way back to that period of ancient enlightenment, actualization, and freedom, as individuals and as a global community of humanity and Planet. Aristotle spoke of how all things in the world had a purpose, a teleos, and for centuries this idea was how we structured our understanding of purpose. Teleos is a relevant concept even regarding chaos, relativity and field theories given the nature of the entity is defined only in regard to its relation relative to other objects and, at a subatomic level, its being under observation. By extension, capital performs best when viewed relative to its context, its portfolio and market community; its nature is determined as a function of its relation to other entities. The value of capital is best appreciated when we understand it as simultaneously economic and social and environmental with each of these components, in turn, continuously interacting and intertwined. Value manifests in diverse and various ways but is always more than economic value alone. Capital is about more than money; it is about freedom.

Spotlight On… Operational Management of Off-Grid Energy Hubs
By powering electric appliances for productive uses and charging batteries (e.g., for electric vehicles) off-grid solar PV “energy hubs” can make a meaningful contribution towards electricity access in rural and peri-urban areas.
Planning and implementing such energy hubs require both thorough planning as well as an operational management of all assets to ensure economic viability of the hub. This is especially important in case of an increasing energy demand over time and/or changing productive use cases (e.g., from charging mobile phones or solar lanterns towards charging electric vehicles).
Against this background, Siemens Stiftung together with the university “Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt” is holding a virtual session on operational management of off-grid energy hubs. This virtual session is part of the digital series “Spotlight on…”, which aims to connect different stakeholders from the e-mobility sector and promote data sharing amongst those.
On September 15th 2022, we invite you to learn how you can benefit from state-of-the-art algorithms and mathematical optimization to best-possibly operate an energy hub. Mr. Aminu Bugaje and Dr Mathias Ehrenwirth are going to present an app which was developed within a joint research project between Siemens Stiftung and Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt supported by the German Development Cooperation through GIZ. Join us for an introduction on off-grid energy hubs, presentation of the app and a brief demonstration of a case study, followed by a 30-minute Q&A session. Following the session, the web-app will be made available to the participants.

TBLI Talk: “Financial Inclusion is a Lie”
The term “financial inclusion” as described by the fintech industry is a lie, says Emmanuel Daniel, in his recent book “The Great Transition – the personalization of finance is here”. Emmanuel Daniel is the award-winning founder of The Asian Banker and Wealth and Society.
He argues that the phrase was forcibly requisitioned by the platform players because it suited their business model of onboarding millions of customers and then monetizing them. He points out that the way that technology players are funded by venture capitalists today does not allow them to create a viable business model to succeed in financial inclusion.
What will you learn:
- Why is Financial Inclusion a lie?
- What are the potential consequences of financial inclusion that is wrongly applied?
- What then should be the goal of “financial inclusion”
TBLI Circle Members (www.tblicircle.com) receive 40% discount. (15 euros instead of 25 euros).

Inclusive Green Finance Global Trends & Good Practice
IFAD recently developed an innovative ‘financial value chain’ programme design approach to inclusive smallholder adaptation finance. Focusing on smallholder farmer needs, demand, and household economic context, the approach estimates smallholder propensity to borrow, capacity to borrow, and adaptation technology needs/ knowledge. The design approach assesses interest of potential financial institution partners, their financial absorption and management capacity, and their ability to reach targeted smallholder market. This approach is guided by and is consistent with IFAD’s new Inclusive Rural Finance Policy and was developed for and implemented in IFAD’s IGREEFIN 2 design for seven countries along the Great Green Wall as a Green Climate Fund proposal.Time: 4:00 Paris | 10:00 AM EST- Tags
