    4th World Bank IFS ODI Tax Conference: Global Tax Equity

    Inequality is one of the global challenges of our times. This phenomenon is increasingly cross-border in nature and suffers from a lack of data. What is the role of fiscal policy in dealing with this challenge, both internationally and domestically? How might new data sources inform the debate?This conference brings together leading researchers and policy makers to discuss recent research on making the tax system more equitable at a global scale, including:
    Taxation of high-net-worth individuals, including wealth taxation;
    Tax transparency, beneficial ownership, offshoring and tax havens;
    Taxes on multinationals and large corporations, including BEPS pillar I and II;
    Distributional properties of environmental taxation;
    New forms of measurement (offshore wealth data, profit shifting, environmental tax incidence).
    OVERVIEW

    Program: The conference will feature a keynote address by Professor Gabriel Zucman, University of California at Berkely, research presentations and academic discussions, and a special session in which policy makers will present policy proposals and receive feedback from academics.Format: The conference will take place in person, with limited remote presentation possibilities for presenters who are unable to travel due to Covid or vaccination-related regulation. Remote participation for attendees not on the program will be facilitated.

    Unlocking Sustainable Finance for Nature-Based Solutions

    Join us for an event on the sidelines of UNGA 77 in New York where Devex — in partnership with FinDev Canada, Pollination and ANZ — will show how private investors and development finance institutions hold the power to protect, sustainably manage, and restore ecosystems through investments in nature-based solutions.

    Investors are now coming under increasing scrutiny over how far their investments support a pathway to net-zero, particularly in low- and middle-income countries that often bear the highest burden of climate impacts. Private investors and development finance institutions have an opportunity to participate meaningfully in the funding of nature-based projects in these markets and expand access to bankable solutions.

    The financing of nature-based solutions requires collaboration across a diverse set of partners, including the public and private sector, conservation organizations, commercial and impact investors, donors, and many more.

    Register for the event if you’re interested in:
    • Uncovering practical recommendations for investors looking to invest long term in nature-based solutions.
    • How development finance institutions can play a catalytic role in both crowding in more private capital and facilitating the deployment of capital in more challenging country settings.
    • Best practices from FinDev Canada, Pollination and ANZ, and lessons learned.

    Save your spot to join us online to discuss how investments in nature-based solutions hold the key to a clearer path to net zero.

    Please note that registration for the in-person event is invite only. To request an invitation to attend, please complete the application form here.

    Supporting Managers in Their HRD Role

    Learn how to improve your staff management practices, even if you are not an HR professional!

    One of the priority topics for financial service providers that emerged from last year’s survey on human resource development practices, was how to help managers across hierarchies and functional areas in financial institutions recruit, support, and mentor their staff – in short HR guidance for managers outside the HR department.

    During the webinar, Patricia Richter of the ILO’s Social Finance Programme will summarize key actions emerging from last year’s survey based on input from 195 financial service providers globally. Then senior managers from VisionFund (Bolivia), Al Majmoua (Lebanon) and ASKI (Philippines) will share their HR practices and lessons learned from successfully developing a strong in-house system of HR practices into their staff management processes.

    This webinar is one in a series on human resource development, organized by the e-MFP Human Resources Action Group (https://www.e-mfp.eu/human-resources-action-group) in collaboration with the ILO’s Social Finance Programme. Throughout the series we will share the results of the Action Group’s survey on HRD practices and discuss the following topics with microfinance practitioners: aligning HRD and business strategy (6 September), supporting managers in their HRD role (22 September) and equal opportunities for women (October).

    Safety First: Eliminate Violence to Transform Education

    Please note that this is for the virtual registration. If you are interested in attending in person, please go to: https://bit.ly/3AzrZOx

    Presented on the sidelines of the Transforming Education Summit

    Children around the world are exposed to unconscionable levels of violence. In some regions, two thirds of children suffer physical violence and one third of girls suffer sexual abuse. Violence has devastating effects on brain development, health outcomes, and educational achievement all of which dims the child’s life chances and limits the potential of their country.

    Efforts to prevent violence are seriously limited by patchy data, especially in low- and middle-income countries, and by the lack of proven, coordinated interventions that can reach all three of the most common locations of abuse—homes, schools, and communities.

    Far too often schools and the systems around them fail at the core task of keeping children learning and safe from harm. Nobody attending the Transforming Education Summit this week would allow their children to attend schools that subjected them to abuse. And so it’s hard to understand why tackling violence is not top of the agenda at every education conference.

    Join us for a conversation about the scope and scale of the problem that we are facing, what some of the proven and promising solutions are, and what governments, NGOs and the research community needs to do next to eliminate violence to transform education.
