GLF Forests 2025: Defining the Next Decade of Action

We can’t solve the climate crisis without forests – but will forests survive in our warming world?

This year, Brazil will host the COP30 climate conference in the heart of the Amazon rainforest – putting the spotlight on one of the world’s most important tropical environments, a biodiversity hotspot and globally important carbon sink.

But the world’s forests are increasingly under threat – both from deforestation and from the climate crisis itself. The Amazon rainforest is on the brink of a tipping point.

The next decade will be crucial for our forests. What do we need to do to save them before it’s too late?

Following last year’s COP29 in Azerbaijan, join us on the road from Baku to Belém along with 1,000 experts, scientists, practitioners, policymakers and grassroots leaders from around the world, to lay the foundations for a resilient, productive and just future for forests, building on 30 years of CIFOR-ICRAF research and findings.

Climate Adaptation Finance: Targeting the Most Vulnerable

As evidence mounts that mitigation alone won’t prevent significant global temperature increases, climate adaptation and resilience to protect the poorest are more urgent than ever. Multilateral development banks (MDBs) are among the largest sources of adaptation finance to lower-income countries, providing $25 billion per year. But that’s still a fraction of what’s needed, and too often the conversation stops at the size of the gap, rather than other key issues like targeting—highlighted in a new CGD paper, which finds that some of the most at-risk countries receive relatively little adaptation finance from the World Bank.

This event goes beyond the financing shortfall to explore several urgent questions, building on the new CGD paper: How can we target MDB adaptation finance to the most vulnerable countries? How do we mobilize more adaptation finance? What’s the best way to boost investments in countries vulnerable to both climate shocks and conflict? What will it take to build more resilient agriculture, and expand energy access for greater resilience?

A New Era of International Partnerships: A Fireside Chat with European Commissioner Jozef Síkela

As the world’s largest provider of development assistance, the EU (and its member states) are crucial to responding to the challenges that the world is currently facing. But the current seismic shift with large aid cuts among traditional donors is putting huge pressure on EU development cooperation. As the bloc faces down rising competition and shifting alliances, multiple security threats along its borders, and fiscal constraints—the EU’s role as global leader in development cooperation is going to have to change.

Launched in 2021, the Global Gateway (the EU’s flagship initiative on international partnerships, a EUR 300 billion infrastructure and connectivity plan) embodies a new direction for EU international development cooperation focused on strengthening its global influence through investments in infrastructure and sustainable development.

Join us for a fireside conversation with the newly appointed European Commissioner for International Partnerships, Jozef Síkela, to discuss his vision and priorities for EU’s international presence, including via the Global Gateway, and the importance of partnerships at this critical time.

    Commissioner’s Bio

Jozef Síkela was appointed European Commissioner for International Partnerships in December 2024. He is responsible for leading the EU’s efforts to build and strengthen partnerships with countries and scaling up the Global Gateway—the EU’s developments strategy supporting resilience, economic development and job creation in partner countries.

Before joining the European Commission, Jozef Síkela was the Czech Minister of Industry and Trade (2021–2024), where he led the EU’s response to the energy crisis after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, contributing to fostering economic competitiveness during the Czech presidency of the Council of the EU. Prior to that, Jozef Síkela held senior positions in the European banking sector. He led the branches of the banking group Erste Group in Ukraine and Slovakia and served as a member of the Board of Directors.
