Associate Director, Technology & Strategy

Organization description and opportunity

Waste Ventures India is a successful for-profit company that is changing paradigms in solid waste management by employing low-income individuals to environmentally process waste, which we then sell as compost to farmers. We are not content in creating a profitable venture; we create waste picker livelihoods, work to prevent 90% of waste we sort from being dumped, reduce greenhouse gases, and increase agricultural productivity.

We are currently growing our operations in Hyderabad and across Telangana, with an eye toward scaling throughout India. As we identify new business opportunities and streamline our current projects, we seek a Senior Manager, Technology & Strategy who can provide the solid waste management expertise required to help WVI implement innovative and best-practice operations.

The Senior Manager, Technology & Strategy will serve as WVI’s foremost expert on solid waste management, with responsibilities including:

1. Lead the strategy and execution of large-scale solid waste management projects for our Tier III cities

  • Strategically assess technologies and operating models and design project setups (e.g. cluster basis) based on waste composition, geography and logistics, stakeholder dynamics, etc.
  • Broker agreements on international and local financing
  • Pilot and launch implementation of new models

2. Lead the technical design and implementation of projects within our urban waste management program (in Hyderabad) to drive profitability

  • Identify the most appropriate technologies (e.g. composting setups, custom collection bins) and operating models for our resident-facing Easy Bin business line
  • Research, analyze and implement new technologies for our dry waste processing center

3. Serve as WVI’s lead expert to provide technical expertise on solid waste management, especially with an eye toward Indian technologies, regulations and financing opportunities

  • Build out network of solid waste management infrastructure providers (may require attending conferences or other events)
  • Stay abreast of development in Indian solid waste management regulations and determine how changes may impact WVI's strategy
  • Develop proposals for Indian and international funding mechanisms where appropriate to WVI's business strategy

Beyond the specific aforementioned core objectives, the role will have the following responsibilities:

  • Report to the Principal and work closely with the Principal and work cross-functionally across our Tier III city model, new business lines, and CSR projects
  • Provide support as needed to company leadership such as internal strategy and sector networking

  • High-performing undergraduate background required, graduate degree preferred
  • Minimum 5 years of work experience
  • Experience in implementing infrastructure projects, preferably in solid waste management
  • Experience navigating municipal, state, federal, and/or multilateral bureaucratic channels
  • Agronomy, business and/or entrepreneurial backgrounds are a plus
  • Mix of Western and emerging markets work or educational experience is a plus
  • Telugu language ability is a plus but not required
