FOCUS: Emerging Market Venture Capital, Investment Advisory & Business Strategy
START DATE:  January 2017

•       Sole-Sell Side Advisor for a Series Seed round of $1.5M for Kenyan m-commerce enabled B2B distribution company
•       Program review and strategy development for the World Bank and leading clean energy companies on market-based interventions that will bring clean energy and improved cooking solutions to East Africa’s refugee camps and slums
•       Sole-Sell Side Advisor on $4M capital raise & Pan-African expansion strategy for largest branded beverage company in Burkina Faso
•       Due diligence strategy & advisory support to USAID’s Development Innovation Ventures (DIV) grant program focused on investing in high-impact for-profit and non-profit innovations
•       Analysis & entry strategy for developing leading cold chain infrastructure business in East Africa
•       Ongoing due diligence, fund management and fund strategy support to the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves, ranging from early stage capacity building to pilot innovation and growth stage venture grant initiatives
•       Field focus groups and value chain mapping of the livestock & meat sector in Kenya to make recommendations to a leading development initiative on priority investments to attract foreign investment
•       East Africa market penetration and growth strategy for leading South African clean energy company


As an Associate Fellow in I-DEV’s Africa regional headquarters, you will:

•       Work directly with I-DEV’s local and global teams, as well as have frequent and direct exposure to I-DEV Global Partners on active assignments, both with the Insight & Strategy and Investment Advisory Groups, gaining broad exposure to emerging market investment, impact investing and international development sectors;
•       Be paired on assignments based on expressed interest, where possible, and focused on existing live engagements;
•       Provide support & leading in compiling proposals and pitches to potential clients; and
•       In some cases, will have an opportunity to travel for projects throughout the region and globally.

I-DEV takes pride in our Fellowship program and the immersion experience on day-to-day operations and training to make sure your time is well spent with us. Beyond the Fellowship, I-DEV will help all Associate Fellows to consider and connect with others in our network regarding a next career move. In special cases, Associate Fellows may be considered for a permanent position with I-DEV after completion of the Fellowship.

Core qualifications for Associate Fellows:
•       Minimum of 2 years experience in management consulting and/or venture capital, private equity or impact investing
•       Proficient in financial modeling and cost/benefit analysis; strong quantitative skills
•       Strong critical thinking skills, and ability to think out-of-the-box to develop innovative solutions; structure problems logically and then design and implement solutions that focus on the core issues
•       Comfort working independently and in an entrepreneurial, start up environment
•       Strong organizational and project management skills
•       Previous experience and comfort with client-facing interactions, such as compiling and presenting recommendations in PowerPoint and/or leading client meetings
•       Strong history of team collaboration and effective internal/external communications
•       BA, BS or equivalent undergraduate degree; graduate degree (ideally, MBA) in finance or business a plus, or similar certification such as CFA

During the Fellowship Period of six (6) months, the Associate Fellows will be given reasonable compensation for accommodations and transportation around Nairobi. I-DEV will additionally provide for medical insurance, and cover the cost of work-related travel or event attendance during the Fellowship period.
