Umati Capital is a start-up digital financial services provider seeking to revolutionise access to finance within the supply chains of small and growing businesses. Initially focused on agriculture, we aim to achieve this through the provision of working capital to small businesses that purchase raw inputs from primary agricultural providers, process and sell those inputs to downstream buyers including the largest retail chains in East Africa. Currently operating in Kenya, we intend to scale out our model across Africa to reach the vast majority of small & growing businesses that are underserved by existing financial services providers.

The Opportunity: Umati Capital seeks an experienced professional to join our team as the Chief Financial Officer based in Nairobi Kenya.   The role serves as a business partner to the CEO on the organization’s capital raising, financial planning and general strategy with an eye to continuously developing and improving systems.

The ideal candidate is a results-focused professional with vision and a track record of raising capital and building the balance sheet of a company to complete strategic goals.   As a member of the leadership team, you will draw on best practice to support the growth of an organisation that aims to revolutionise access to finance through the consistent and innovative use of technology.

The CFO will play a strategic role in the overall financial management of Umati Capital Limited. This position will partner with the CEO in the development and sustainment of the organization’s financial, budgeting, and operational strategies. This position will develop strong relationships throughout the organization, further strengthening the overall leadership and management initiatives for the finance team. This person will have the day-to-day responsibility for capital raising, planning, financial modeling developing policy, overseeing operations, the company’s financial strategy, risk management, and the funding and treasury management of the company. This will include direct responsibility for financial planning, analyzing metrics tied to strategy, developing and monitoring tracking systems, providing operational and programmatic support, implementing cost benefit analysis tools, reporting financial results and securing new funding – both debt and equity. This position will also be responsible for reporting out the organization’s financial performance to all stakeholders. The CFO will oversee the Finance & Administration team.


Capital Raising

– Originate and execute programs for the provision of debt & equity capital required by the company including negotiation and maintenance of covenants

– Determine the balance between short term and long term debt across different currencies in line with overall annual budget targets

– Coordinate the long term plans of the company, assess the financial requirements implicit in these plans and develop alternative ways in which financial requirements can be satisfied
Strategy, Leadership and Management

– Participate in the formulation of company strategy and future planning through the development of policies and performance measures

– Develop and lead all financial strategies for the company, ensuring the functional objectives are in line with company objectives

– Lead the preparation, successful execution, and follow up for stakeholders meetings

Financial Planning and Analysis

– Develop all financial modeling for the purposes of annual budgeting, debt and equity capital raising

– Oversee the implementation of the analysis of strategic financial business planning and tax strategies in order to control impact across the company

– Develop, measure, and maintain key financial metrics

– Prepare analysis and make recommendations for future planning and strategy to CEO and stakeholders, based on, but not limited to: current economic trends, company operations, identified efficiencies, cost benefit analysis, and the need for system enhancements

– Develop and lead all company budgeting, forecasting, and reporting activities

– Lead and manage the development of models and evaluations for acquisition and expansion prospects as well as fund expansion

– Participate in the corporate policy development process as a member of the senior management team

Financial Reporting

– Oversee and/or prepare financial reports to all applicable units and stakeholders

– Manage monthly and quarterly financial and management reviews with department heads and quarterly reporting for executive management, Stakeholders, and the Board of Directors

– Oversee the management and coordination of all fiscal reporting activities, including but not limited to: company revenue/expense and balance sheet reports, funding agencies, and the development and monitoring of company and contract/grant budgets

– Analyze reports as needed, initiating corrective actions in order to minimize impact of variances

Risk Management

– Oversee annual review of insurance coverage in order to ensure appropriate coverage for the company

– Ensure proper controls and compliance, and that effective internal controls are in place and the company is in compliance with local regulations

– Responsible for the development and continual improvement of internal controls; oversee annual audit and all external financial reporting

– Oversee annual audit and all external financial reporting; including but not limited to annual audits and proper filing of tax returns

– Maintain relationships with external auditors; review recommendations, implement corrections as needed

– Oversee all agreements concerning financial obligations; approve all organizational actions requiring commitment of financial resources

– Oversee Emergency Response Plan, which includes but is not limited to the development and implementation of a disaster recovery plan

Funding and Treasury

– Oversee company cash balances and forecasts

– Maintain banking relationships for all financial transactions

– Project and make recommendations pertaining to the company’s needs for debt and equity financing

– Identify and invest surplus funds as needed

– Ensure maximization of the return on invested funds, oversee the management of ALCO

Qualifications & Preferred Skill Sets:

– 10+ years in progressively responsible financial leadership roles, preferably in financial services

– Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required.  CPA or  Masters’ degree in business and/or finance  related discipline preferred

– Experience at the CFO level in an organization of a similar size and entrepreneurial style preferred

– Demonstrated ability to raise capital, particularly in businesses that rely on access to debt capital

– Ability to adapt to dynamic environment; proven change agent

– High level of integrity with a commitment to transparent reporting and analysis

– Hands-on experience leading and managing an accounting team

– Experience with the implementation and use of computer based accounting and integrated financial reporting systems, with an exceptional understanding of how technology can be used effectively to improve operational efficiency

– Strong interpersonal skills, ability to communicate and manage well at all levels of the organization and with staff at remote locations essential

– Strong problem solving and creative skills and the ability to exercise sound judgment and make decisions based on accurate and timely analyses

– High level of dependability with a strong sense of urgency and results-orientation.
