Green Africa Youth Organization (GAYO) is looking for a Climate Lead to oversee our climate programmatic work, encompassing several projects and teams across various country offices. The Climate Lead will ensure the Climate Program’s successful implementation, growth, and alignment with GAYO’s overall objectives and vision. You must possess a solid knowledge and background of climate change and the broader environmental field, and project management expertise, and a collaborative culture to engage diverse  stakeholders, including governments, civil society, intergovernmental processes, and international organizations. The Climate Lead will also ensure coherence between GAYO’s climate work and other thematic areas while representing the organization in relevant forums and meetings. This role is located in Accra, Ghana and will be via a 2-year contract. At least 5 years of experience working in climate change, environmental sustainability, or a related field.

 

POSITION ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1 – Leadership & Management
– Develop and implement GAYO’s climate strategy, ensuring it aligns with our organizational goals and broader international climate targets.
– Lead, design, and manage the climate team, projects, and initiatives across multiple African countries, ensuring successful execution, impact measurement, and replicability.
– Manage and inspire a diverse, multi-country team of early career climate experts, researchers, and project managers. Foster collaboration and inclusivity across regions and ensure alignment with organizational objectives.
– Provide strategic guidance to ensure coherence between the climate team’s activities and other thematic areas, such as circular economy and disaster risk reduction.

2 – Stakeholder Engagement
– Develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders in the climate and environmental ecosystem, including peer youth climate organizations, governmental bodies, international organizations, NGOs, and local communities across Africa, while representing GAYO in climate forums and policy discussions.
– Act as the primary point of contact for climate-related activities, representing GAYO in official communications with partners.
– Engage with local communities, project partners, and participants to ensure inclusiveness and equal opportunities for all stakeholders, particularly marginalized groups such as youth and women.

3 – Project Coordination & Management
– Coordinate with project teams and Country Managers to ensure cost-effective execution of climate projects, maximizing opportunities for stakeholders.
– Develop and oversee yearly, monthly, and quarterly work plans and budgets for climate projects, ensuring alignment with GAYO’s goals.
– Support the monitoring, evaluation, and learning (MEL) activities and project teams in tracking project progress, documenting best practices, and identifying lessons learned for future projects.

4 – Communication & Representation
– Ensure effective communication among project teams, stakeholders, and partners to facilitate smooth project execution.
– Represent GAYO at climate-related forums, conferences, and meetings, both regionally and globally, to advocate for youth engagement and climate solutions.
– Provide regular updates and reports to GAYO leadership on climate project developments, challenges, and successes.

5 – Budget & Resource Management
– Coordinate the development of yearly, quarterly, and monthly budgets for climate projects in collaboration with the Project Coordinators, Program Director, and finance team.
– Ensure transparent and efficient management of project resources, staying within budget constraints while achieving project objectives.

6 – Capacity Building & Knowledge Sharing
– Work with GAYO’s teams to develop capacity-building programs for project staff, youth, and community members to strengthen climate resilience and sustainability efforts.
– Promote the sharing of knowledge, best practices, and innovation across GAYO’s climate interventions to foster continuous improvement and learning.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS
– Bachelor’s degree in Climate Change, Environmental Science, Sustainable Development, or a related field (Master’s degree is preferred).
– At least 5 years of experience working in climate change, environmental sustainability, or a related field.
– Proven experience in managing projects and teams across different geographic locations.
– Experience working with diverse stakeholders, including government, international organizations, and grassroots movements.
– Familiarity with climate resilience, adaptation, and mitigation strategies, particularly in Africa.
– Experience in budget management, project planning, and report writing.
– Ability to build partnerships and maintain productive relationships with stakeholders.
– Solid project management skills, including budgeting, work planning, and coordination.
– Strong leadership and team management skills.
– Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
– Demonstrated high proficiency in English (reading, writing, and speaking). Working knowledge of French is an asset.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS
1. Contract duration: 2 years (renewable)
2. Working hours: 40 hours per week
3. Working language: English
4. Monthly gross salary between GH¢ 10,000 and GH¢ 20,000, depending on experience and qualifications.
