Acumen is seeking a bilingual professional with 3-5 years of communications or marketing experience and rootedness in Colombian development context to implement Spanish language communications targeting Latin America.

Acumen Latin America
Acumen Latin America (ALA) started operations in 2013 and has a team based in Bogota focusing on Colombia and Peru. To date, ALA has made eight investments totalling $5 million in agribusiness companies that seek to impact the livelihood of small holder farmers in Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, Guatemala and Belize. Other sectors of interest are education and energy. In 2015, Acumen signed a Cooperative Agreement with USAID Colombia to extend its work to post-conflict areas of Colombia under a facility called the Investing in Peace Fund. Over the past 15 years, Acumen has built a strong brand and highly effective communications strategy to support its mission of changing the way the world tackles poverty. Acumen’s team is responsible for the organization’s multi-channel communications, brand storytelling and digital marketing for all stakeholders globally.
To date, Acumen has had limited communications activities in Spanish. As an affiliated member of Acumen’s global communications team, you will help build a strong communications presence in Spanish focusing on Latin America.
The main objectives of this postion include:
+ Strengthen Acumen’s position as a thought leader in poverty alleviation and impact investing in Latin America
+ Contribute to advancing the team’s knowledge about the role of social enterprises in tackling poverty in the region
+ Co-create and implement a local Communications strategy in partnership with the ALA and global communications team
+ Build a community of like-minded supporters, including: social entrepreneurs and other social change-makers, investors, ecosystem builders, and partners
+ Create awareness about Acumen’s new Fellows Program in Colombia and support outreach, recruitment and communications activities
+ Support communications activities of the USAID Investing for Peace Fund by showcasing our investments in postconflict areas of Colombia to encourage others to invest
The ALA Communications Associate will be charged with implementing ALA Spanish language communications targeting Latin America. The Associate will report directly to Acumen’s Latin America Director and report indirectly to Acumen’s Director of Marketing and Communications, based in New York. The Associate will work closely with Acumen’s global communications team and with the ALA team.
Specifically, responsibilities include:
+ Produce content for ALA’s online presence in Spanish on Acumen’s website, Facebook page, and Twitter account.
+ Write original content in Spanish about ALA’s work to be used for communications in Latin America and to be translated for use for Acumen’s global communications efforts
+ Work with the Communications and Business Development teams to translate and co-create fundraising and branded awareness materials and collateral into Spanish
+ Translate existing global communications content into Spanish for use in Latin America and across our channels
+ Write and support communications pieces prepared by both the global communications and ALA teams
+ Write blog posts either in collaboration with the global communications team, ALA team and Acumen Fellows, or on your own which showcase Acumen’s work
+ Develop and disseminate content about Acumen’s Fellows Program in Colombia
+ Support the communications activities of the USAID Investing for Peace Fund
Manage media relations:
+ Support the team in identifying and cultivating relationships with local thought leaders, media contacts, journalists and publications in line with Acumen’s organizational priorities and strategic messaging goals
+ Collaborate with team members to draft and circulate press releases for new investments
+ Work closely with the Communications Director to support the communications stream of Acumen’s USAID partnership
+ Support team in the development of reports for funders, particularly USAID
Qualifications & Characteristics
+ Minimum 3-5 years of work of combined communications and/or marketing experience
+ Critical thinker with superior writing skills in both English and Spanish and attention to detail
+ Dedication to social impact in emerging markets, and in particular, to entrepreneurial solutions to development challenges
+ Deep understanding of Latin America’s, and specifically Colombia’s, development context
+ Understanding of today’s communications landscape and best practices
+ Proactive approach to working collaboratively
+ Fluency in both English and Spanish
