Job Description: The Communications and Development Coordinator is responsible for developing and implementing Greater Newark Healthcare Coalition’s (GNHCC) communications and outreach strategies and for supporting GNHCC’s funding strategies through the identification and submission of grants. The coordinator will research evidence-based best practices in support of GNHCC planning and program development and in furtherance of GNHCC’s public education mission. The fellow will also identify and help to secure funding opportunities in alignment with GNHCC’s mission.

This opportunity is ideal for someone who has a passion for health care and social justice, and who is interested in innovative and creative ways to use communications, outreach, and research strategies to drive transformation in health care. The fellow will be excited to learn and develop professionally and will have the opportunity to work with leaders of health care institutions, local and state government, philanthropy, and peers in the field. Reporting to the Executive Director and Project Managers, the Communications and Development Coordinator will have broad exposure to all aspects of developing and implementing communications, outreach, and research strategies at an innovative healthcare startup.

GNHCC began in 2008 as a vehicle for response to the closure of two Newark hospitals. It provided a conduit for information between hospital CEOs and the New Jersey Commissioner of Health. As the crisis abated, the participants determined that there was value in the continuation of an organization comprising high-level representatives of Newark-area entities concerned with access to high-quality health care – and in particular, primary health care – in the greater Newark area. Over time, the organization grew to include high-level representatives of hospitals, primary health care, educational institutions, advocacy organizations, behavioral health organizations, visiting nurse organizations, and others. The New Jersey and Newark health departments are represented ex officio. GNHCC works to create health equity for residents of the Greater Newark region by improving healthcare access and quality and by integrating healthcare with other anchor systems such as education, workforce development, criminal justice, child welfare, housing, and food and economic supports. Chief strategies include (1) engaging in health policy planning and advocacy through data collection, analysis and dissemination, best practice research, and public education, and (2) collaborating to develop initiatives aimed at identifying and eliminating health disparities and other barriers that lead to poor health outcomes. Key GNHCC roles include innovative partnerships, outreach and engagement, regional planning, and advocacy.

This position is part of the Global Health Corps fellowship. Global Health Corps (GHC) is a leadership development organization focused on building the next generation of diverse, disruptive global health leaders. Founded in 2009, we competitively recruit talented professionals (ages 21-30) from a range of sectors and backgrounds and place them in high-impact roles within partner organizations — including Clinton Health Access Initiative, Partners in Health, Planned Parenthood Global, and Government Ministries in Zambia, Rwanda, and Uganda — working on the front lines of health equity in Malawi, Rwanda, Uganda, the US, and Zambia.
