About the position
The Director, Africa Region will lead Evidence Action’s overall organizational presence in Africa. Working in an entrepreneurial and fast-paced environment, this person’s responsibilities will include oversight of program delivery, people management, external relations, and operations/budget management in our five program countries in the region (with the potential for expansion). S/he will bring strategic thinking and thought leadership both to the region’s ongoing operations and growth plans. This person will be an exceptional performer who is inspired by Evidence Action’s mission to bring proven interventions to scale. The Director will have outstanding management skills and lead a team culture characterized by high achievement and strong professional development through living and instilling Evidence Action’s values. S/he should also have extensive experience engaging and maintaining productive working relationships with senior external stakeholders including government, major donors, and partners. Reporting to the CEO, the Director will serve as a member of Evidence Action’s Global Leadership Team that contributes to the strategic direction and decision-making of the organization.
The Director will focus on providing strategic inputs for the region’s programs in coordination with program leads. S/he will provide inputs into incubation and development of new programs in the region, strengthening and expanding existing programs, mobilizing resources toward programs, and overseeing the region’s matrixed functions (e.g., Finance and Administration, Monitoring & Evaluation, and Human Resources).
Finally, the Director will be a seasoned professional with at least 8 years of work experience, including 5 or more years of program leadership and management experience and an interest in expanding his/her horizons within a mission-driven organization committed to impact at scale. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record driving results in a dynamic environment, specifically in an international development, corporate, or management consulting setting.

Responsibilities
Lead Evidence Action’s organizational presence in Africa
Lead regional strategic direction with the input and engagement of regional and global leadership
Develop strong relationships with senior government, donor, and partner stakeholders in the countries where Evidence Action operates, to drive achievement of key program objectives
Serve as a strategic thinker as a key member of Evidence Action’s global leadership
Develop and deliver on ambitious regional goals in alignment with overall organizational goals
Deliver on policies and standard operating procedures that have significant implications for associated financial, legal, reputational, and other institutional risks

Deliver world-class programs that impact the lives of millions at scale
Hold ultimate responsibility and accountability for operations of mature programs in the region (Deworm the World Initiative in Kenya and Nigeria and Dispensers for Safe Water in Kenya, Uganda, and Malawi) including meeting service delivery targets, managing government relations, and developing and operationalizing budgets and financial plans
Ensure program teams engage effectively in the organization’s matrixed structure, maximizing engagement with and value from Finance & Administration and Human Resources teams
Liaise with regional and global Finance leads to ensure rapid and accurate financial reporting to our donors

Ensure a high-performing team environment and a strong professional development culture
Attract, develop and retain excellent team members, manage ~5 direct reports, and support program leads to do the same
Maintain and develop a regional culture of excellent people management consistent with high-quality decision-making and Evidence Action values
Provide inputs to and overall responsibility for regional HR policy and practice in alignment with organizational policies

Qualifications and skills

The ideal candidate will also possess cultural sensitivity skills and demonstrate high emotional intelligence, as they will be working closely with government and external partners. Specifically, the candidate will have:
At least 8 years of work experience in a demanding and results-driven environment. This will include a background in managing international development programs and/or management consulting, comprised of multiple work streams and teams with diverse backgrounds and skills
Proven experience leading development programs (Africa-specific experience is a plus) with demonstrated success in problem-solving, collaboration, and working with/managing cross-cultural teams; a combination of public and private sector experience is an advantage
A master’s degree in development, business or economics
Experience in successfully presenting to and negotiating with senior government stakeholders; proven ability to manage a variety of external relationships in multicultural settings
Experience leading scale-focused work with a major operations component – building systems, bringing together organizational functions and developing highly efficient teams
Significant experience applying data and quantitative analysis to drive decision making and information systems to improve service delivery
Experience with complex budget management, including managing multiple donors, restricted funds, and meeting donor compliance requirements
A strong commitment to evidence-based practice and policy in the development field
A sense of humor and excitement to be part of an engaged and intellectually stimulating work environment
Availability for 30% regional and international travel
