Position Overview: The Director of Accounting is responsible for designing and implementing the appropriate accounting policies and procedures and internal controls for all Root Capital offices. S/he directly supervises the Accounting Managers in Cambridge, Latin America, and Africa as well as the Sr. Accountant in Cambridge and the Project Administrator in Senegal. S/he produces timely, accurate consolidated Financial Statements, and manages the annual Financial and A-133 audits and IRS Form 990.
1. Accounting Leadership
a. Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.
b. Maintain internal control and safeguards for receipt of revenue, costs, and grant expenditures.
c. Consistently analyze financial data and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and be actively involved in monitoring the Root Capital’s financial status.
d. Assist the Financial Planning & Analysis team in the annual budgeting and planning process, including supporting the budget vs actuals analysis and transactions reclassifications.
e. Support the CFO in engaging the board’s audit and enterprise risk (A&ER) committee around issues of audit, internal controls, and applicable accounting practices.
f. Oversee all project/program and grants accounting; ensure that expenditures are consistently aligned with grant and program budgets throughout the grant/fund period; collate financial reporting materials for government, corporate, and foundation grants.
g. Oversee all of the accounting systems which comprise of Intacct, Softland, and Concur, and be actively engaged in the design and implementation of other financial systems such as Bankcore and Ncino to ensure that they contain the necessary controls, consistency, and integrity to support the financial reporting and annual audit procedures.
h. Design and implement appropriate policies and effectively communicate new systems, policies and processes to staff.
i. Oversee all of the field office accounting activities, including occasional travel to perform internal reviews and training.
j. Support cashflow monitoring activities by ensuring that bank accounts are reconciled monthly, helping design appropriate policies, controls, and systems, and providing input to the CFO and Director of Treasury Operations.
k. Research new and existing accounting guidance and providing management with timely interpretation of how such guidance affects Root Capital’s accounting and financial reporting activities.
2. Team Leadership
a. Leverage strengths of the current accounting team members, help to clarify roles and responsibilities and develop and implement training programs in order to maximize and reach optimal individual and organizational goals.
b. Supervise Accounting Managers in Cambridge, Latin America, and Africa as well as the Sr. Accountant in Cambridge and Project Administrator in Senegal.
c. Provide leadership in strengthening internal communications with staff at all levels throughout the organization; create and promote a positive and supportive work environment.
3. Manage consolidated external audit, Single Audit (formerly A-133), and IRS Form 990.
a. Work directly with auditors on all aspects of audit, including audit planning, on-going daily management, resolution of complex audit issues, and preparation of draft audited financial statements and footnotes.
b. Work directly with auditors and regional accounting to coordinate field office audits.
c. Prepare work schedules as requested by the auditors.
d. Coordinate the preparation, mailing, and follow-up of client/donor/investor confirmations.
e. Prepare annual draft 990 and MA Form PC and work directly with external tax consultants to review, and file with the relevant authorities.
f. Prepare responses to the auditors’ management letter and coordinate around Audit and Enterprise Risk Committee meetings to review, discuss, and approve the audited financial statements, 990, and MA PC.
4. Carry out other work as identified by the CFO.
Required Skills and Experience
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and CPA.
• 8-12 years of progressive accounting experience serving at a management level working within an audit or accounting function.
• Strong understanding of US GAAP.
• Ability to navigate complexity of multi-entity, multi-currency social enterprise with non-profit and financial institution characteristics.
• Advanced oral and written communication skills; comfortable and confident working at all levels within the organization.
