Founded in 2006, One Acre Fund supplies 1 million smallholder farmers with the agricultural services they need to make their farms vastly more productive. With operations across six core countries in Africa, they make farmers more prosperous by providing quality farm supplies on credit, delivered within walking distance of farmers’ homes, and agricultural training to improve harvests. About the role
The Government Relations and Policy team works with governments at local and national levels to advocate on behalf of One Acre Fund clients. The team builds relationships with government officials to keep them informed about their work, ensures they comply with all laws related to their fieldwork and creates opportunities to better serve their clients. The team also advocates for improved laws and policies that benefit smallholder farmers.

Another goal of the Government Relations and Policy team is to scope out partnerships and collaboration opportunities with the government. The Government Relations Senior Manager will be a member of the department’s senior leadership team, and reports to the department director. The role holder directly leads their Kenya and Tanzania Government Relations teams as well as support the department director to execute important, cross-country leadership functions.

Key Responsibilities:
Kenya and Tanzania government relations management

Manage a team of 18+ Government Relations (GR) team members with relationship management, policy and compliance portfolios at local and national levels, and directly manage two high capacity government relations analysts in Kenya and Tanzania respectively
Develop the GR strategy in Kenya and Tanzania and guide execution with project management tools
Formulate creative strategies to build influential and strategic networks; identify new opportunities to work with highest level political and executive leadership, and cultivate partnership opportunities with government
Manage highest level external relations and use them to advocate for One Acre Fund strategic interests
Oversee organizational risk management on important issues related to political, regulatory and policy trends
Invest in the growth of individual team members to become stronger leaders
Provide clear recommendations to One Acre Fund field leadership on core programmatic tasks like expansion planning, trials, research, and repayment
Ensure all required licenses and regulatory approvals are secured for the complete portfolio of products, including pilot programs like nutrition and direct giving
Team Leadership

Promote team and organizational priorities, coordinate on overall GR strategy, provide thought-partnership on resolving priority GR challenges across all One Acre Fund countries, and guide communications through the team
Support the HR Immigration Lead to secure all necessary work permits through refreshing country immigration strategies, maintaining an understanding of in-country leadership on immigration needs, and create solutions to work permit approval challenges directly with senior government officials
Provide occasional short-term support to the department director on GR priorities in-country programs with dotted/advisory lines into the GRP department.

Ability to inspire and align staff towards a common goal/objective
Experience navigating complicated issues with multiple company partners
Ability to summarize complex messages and tailor messages to audiences
Innate ability to visualize multiple connections, inter-dependencies, and map out important paths to create success
Experience working in international/multicultural settings
Language: English and Swahili required
