Job Description: The Engagement Officer will work closely with Shanti’s international team (based both in Canada and Uganda) to ensure successful communications across all platforms and to be the face of the organization for volunteers, interns, and visitors. Shanti has a long history of hosting training retreats, university interns, volunteer medical professionals, and others in Uganda as part of our social enterprise model. The Engagement Officer will plan, coordinate, and help create amazing experiences for all visitors. The Engagement Officer will also strengthen Shanti’s sustainable funding model by improving reach and engagement of donors by communicating organization impact. The fellow will report to the Operations Director (based in Canada), but work closely with the team in Uganda, including the Country Director, Program Manager (in charge of programs and monitoring and evaluation), and the other GHC fellow.

Shanti Uganda’s mission is to improve infant and maternal health throughout Uganda. Our vision is all women have access to a midwife and are able to birth safely within a respectful, collaborative care model. We value community participation, unity, sustainability, and traditional knowledge. Supporting over 1,300 births and impacting over 46,000 lives throughout Uganda since 2008, Shanti Uganda’s proven model of success is poised to scale in order to impact more women and girls throughout Uganda.

The Shanti Uganda Birth House is a solar powered maternity center on one acre of land in the Luwero District of Uganda. The Birth House provides mother-centered care throughout pregnancy, birth, and the postnatal period and acts as a community hub from which Shanti Uganda runs family planning education, prenatal education, prenatal yoga, a Community Garden Program, Teen Health Workshops, and new Postpartum Home Outreach program. Our key priorities in the next year are:

Enhance evidence-based, holistic programs that improve maternal and infant health
Develop the leadership and governance capacity of the organization
Build a strong organization with diverse funding sources to increase financial sustainability and strengthen operations
Deepen program effectiveness and strengthen partnerships through quality impact measurement

This position is part of the Global Health Corps fellowship. Global Health Corps (GHC) is a leadership development organization focused on building the next generation of diverse, disruptive global health leaders. Founded in 2009, we competitively recruit talented professionals (ages 21-30) from a range of sectors and backgrounds and place them in high-impact roles within partner organizations — including Clinton Health Access Initiative, Partners in Health, Planned Parenthood Global, and Government Ministries in Zambia, Rwanda, and Uganda — working on the front lines of health equity in Malawi, Rwanda, Uganda, the US, and Zambia.

Responsibilities:
Communications & PR:
Improve reach and impact of marketing and communications across all platforms
Support Operations Director in developing organization wide marketing and communications strategy plans
Support Operations Director in developing organization-wide media relations strategy, seeking high-level placements in print and online media
Plan and execute marketing campaigns in collaboration with Operations Director and Communications Intern
Monitor, analyze, and communicate communications results on a quarterly basis
Improve and integrate use of Google AdWords into communications
Evaluate opportunities for partnerships, sponsorships, and advertising on an ongoing basis
Engage with Shanti clients, staff and stakeholders to gather content, story ideas, and quotes for use in communications
Proofread and edit all copywriting, including social media posts, press releases, and website content
Design marketing materials, including posters, social media graphics, brochures, and small marketing collateral
Manage Communications Intern, helping with their daily assignments and goal setting as well as performing midterm and final performance reviews and reports
Coordinate all public relations activities and manage media inquiries and interview requests
Leverage existing media relationships and cultivate new contacts
Maintain a keen understanding of industry trends and make appropriate recommendations regarding communication strategy
Volunteer Engagement:
Promote and manage existing revenue generating activities with the goal of strengthening sustainable funding from social enterprise activities
Collaborate with Operations Director in development of group trip dates and activities
Communicate with trip participants, interns, and volunteers to prepare them for travel to Uganda
Support training instructors and group trip leaders before, during, and after trips
Coordinate trip logistics for training retreats and group visits including hotel bookings, activity booking, coordination of in country transportation and food; prepare Shanti staff
Manage training retreat and group budgets, ensuring proper planning and reporting of all costs
Coordinate airport pick up and drop off for interns and volunteers
Conduct intern and volunteer orientation sessions
Create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all visitors
Plan monthly intern outings
Lead weekly intern meetings, addressing concerns and encouraging discussion
Manage Volunteer House supplies and materials, ensuring volunteer needs are met while staying within budget
Support the vision, mission and values of Shanti Uganda
Perform additional duties as assigned

Skills and Experience
Items indicated with an asterisk (*) are required:
Bachelor’s degree*
Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, media relations, journalism, or related field
Demonstrated ability to execute engaging marketing and communications campaigns across platforms, especially digital platforms*
Two to three years of experience with copywriting and content creation, especially in the nonprofit sector*
Experience designing beautiful and brand centric marketing materials (graphic design), ideally using Adobe Suite*
Experience working in a cross-cultural environment with diverse teams *
Vision for creating incredible volunteer experiences*
Experience coordinating event logistics, including travel, venue, and food
Experience with social media, ideally including Hootsuite
Experience with public relations, including writing press releases and building relationships with media organizations, especially online
Experience with Google AdWords
Experience fundraising for a small, grassroots organization
Experience managing people and creating positive work culture
Ability to work independently, with good judgment and confidence
Organized, detail oriented with exceptional communications skills
Flexibility and grace, with a keen understanding of people and conflict resolution
Ability to inspire and help people with different personalities, coming from different cultural contexts thrive
