Job Description: The External Relations and Communications Officer will work under the supervision of the Boston-based University of Global Health Equity (UGHE) Development and Communications Associate to develop, implement, and direct an effective and strategic communications and external relations program by making the public aware of value and importance of the University, enhance its image, programs, services, and activities.

The University of Global Health Equity is a groundbreaking health sciences university in Rwanda that trains global leaders to deliver high-quality health care. Owned and operated by Partners In Health, UGHE is a private institution that leverages expertise and resources from the Government of Rwanda, Harvard Medical School, and key partners to create a global forum for delivery-focused teaching, research, clinical care, and implementation. Classes will be taught by international and local experts, including Harvard Medical School faculty, all of whom are instrumental in leading the transformation of Rwanda’s health care system. In September 2015, UGHE launched its inaugural Master of Science in Global Health Delivery degree (MGHD). The MGHD is the University’s flagship program, and is a two-year, part-time degree for working professionals. It will provide a one-of-a-kind learning experience fundamentally rooted in the principles of global health, One Health, epidemiology, global health policy, management, finance, and leadership.

This position is part of the Global Health Corps fellowship. Global Health Corps (GHC) is a leadership development organization focused on building the next generation of diverse, disruptive global health leaders. Founded in 2009, we competitively recruit talented professionals (ages 21-30) from a range of sectors and backgrounds and place them in high-impact roles within partner organizations — including Clinton Health Access Initiative, Partners in Health, Planned Parenthood Global, and Government Ministries in Zambia, Rwanda, and Uganda — working on the front lines of health equity in Malawi, Rwanda, Uganda, the US, and Zambia.

Responsibilities:
Direct the development and editing of various publications, including news release, feature articles, news stories, academic research which highlight the goals, objectives, policies, programs, activities, and accomplishments of UGHE
Build and foster relationships with key stakeholders and industry partners to obtain their support and share the success and challenges of UGHE
Determine the most appropriate mix media to be used to promote and present UGHE programs, services, and activities
Evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of internal and external information, media relations, and obtain feedback from internal personnel and external partners
Triage press enquiries, including setting up media interviews
Monitor relevant stories within the media and identify opportunities for proactive and reactive coverage
Coordinate internal communication within the Rwanda office and between UGHE offices
Manage UGHE’s Kigali-based external relations program which supports the planning and logistics of donor visits

Skills and Experience
Items indicated with an asterisk (*) are required:
Master’s degree in communication, public relations or any other related field*
Prior experience in communication and external relations, ideally two or more years*
Excellent persuasive communication skills, including strong verbal, written, and editing skills*
Ability to achieve the understanding and support of individuals*
Confidence in building and maintaining effective relationships with people across, and outside, the organization*
A high level of numeracy*
Proven interest in health equity and an interest in a career in global health*
A high level of comfort with quantitative and detail-oriented work*
Ability to build effective relationships with internal and external partners*
Relevant experience (including in undergrad or graduate school) in the field of public or global health or health equity; interest in a career in global health
Experience working with universities
Experience working with journalists, the media, and/or press
Flexibility and maturity
Strong willingness to take initiative
Willingness to work nights, weekends, and long hours
