Overview of Future Laboratories

Future Laboratories is a Research and Development laboratory for social change.

Just as Bell Labs came to life a century ago to pursue the technical moonshots of their times, Future Labs exists to pursue moonshots for humanity. But what excites us most is how we do that—our core technology and, in our view, the most inspiring invention even in the digital age: you. People. And not just individuals, but brilliant teams made up of pragmatic idealists across every imaginable discipline who aren’t afraid to envision a new future and bring it to life.

Leveraging the power of collective genius, Future Laboratories identifies the world’s biggest problems, conducting original diagnostic work on society; turns those problems into massive opportunities in the form of products, policies, campaigns, concepts, or brand-new categories; and then builds solutions until they are scaled. Already, we are working on projects across the realms of the future of human potential, the future of America, the future of capitalism, and the future of social change itself. As more inspiring visionaries join our team, each exploration and project takes on new life, since people—above all—are the fuel for our problem-solving engine.

“Future of Work” Research Associate

Future Laboratories is launching an exploration into the Future of Work — trends, challenges, and opportunities that people in the working world will face as industries continue to modernize and technology continues to advance.   How this impacts us individually, communally, and societally and is one of the most important questions we can tackle as global citizens.  With the rapid pace of technological growth, some believe that soon robots will be performing the majority of jobs and humans will have less job opportunities and increased idle time.  Others believe that much like we have seen throughout history, technology will not replace jobs but instead create jobs we could never have imagined. In addition we are seeing a dramatic shift in how labor is supplied, including the rise of the gig Economy and distributed labor forces around the world.  Finally, increased pressure to find and retain the best talent particularly talent that comes from diverse backgrounds is at the top of mind for many companies. Regardless of which scenario (or more likely a combination), the new nature of work is going to create winners and losers in our society. This can drive toward increased inequality as people struggle to keep pace with the rapidly changing dynamics of work.  That being said, these shifts also present a tremendous opportunity to invest in and build companies that understand the new models of developing and nurturing human capacity and capabilities.  The Future of Work exploration aims to delve into the new challenges and opportunities and develop a viable product and/or service that will significantly impact the future of work.
