About iSDA
iSDA is a mission-driven company bringing advanced technologies to the small farm sector in Africa. They harness the market with the aim of reaching millions of farmers and use the best science to maximize profitability for their clients and farmers. Their current focus is to prove their business models through the delivery of fertilizer recommendations for low-income farmers before expanding to a broader agronomic advisory offering. This is intermediated by local agents and based on technologies tested in Kenya and Ghana: soil data from handheld spectral soil scanners and/or iSDAsoil (the first farm-level soil map of Africa), plus their Virtual Agronomist AI, which uses cutting-edge decision science to provide holistic advisory for continuous improvement of small-scale farm incomes.

About the Role
iSDA is looking for a dynamic Head of Business Development with a strong entrepreneurial spirit and the imagination and people skills to create win-win B2B revenue streams that deliver on their mission to build commercially scalable business models that make a real difference for millions of farmers.

iSDA has been offering a commercial turnkey solution service for fertilizer recommendations which has proven popular with coffee farmers in Kenya. The Head of Business Development will build on this initial success, help them scale up in Kenya, and replicate with other crops in Uganda and Tanzania, as well as Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Nigeria, and beyond.

In parallel, iSDA has been validating their Virtual Agronomist software which can give individually tailored agronomic recommendations at scale. They plan to beta test this in the market during late 2021 and early 2022. The successful candidate will lead the commercialization of this product across Africa while working with the rest of the team to refine and diversify their digital product offerings.

As a start-up, their roles are broader than those in larger companies. The current emphasis is relationship and partnership building during their demonstration and beta testing phase. As their products become more established, they may see a transition towards sales and marketing directly to customers, or they may find that their revenue growth is best served by continuing to focus on B2B partnerships that deal with the onward sales. Thus, iSDA is looking for a candidate with the flexibility to transition between these elements, and the right experience to shape their approach.
The position is Africa-based and will involve extensive travel.

Key Responsibilities
● Develop and lead the execution of iSDA’s business development strategy.
● Pursue new partnership opportunities, performing due diligence, leading commercial negotiations and communicating with stakeholders.
● Explore and refine iSDA’s business model in order to better fit market needs and optimize their overall business.
● Monitor the marketplace and analyze opportunities, providing competitive analysis, strategies, and tactics.
● Stay well-connected with customers to ensure broad market needs are being incorporated into the product development and enhancement cycle.
● Monitor the revenue pipeline and leads, while at the same time adjusting as necessary to create sustainable growth.
● Generate new sales by creating new opportunities and nurture leads via leveraging existing relationships and building new relationships across industries from scratch.
