MCE manages two investment portfolios:

• Small and Growing Businesses that create jobs, help smallholder farmers improve productivity and income, and facilitate clean water and energy. MCE addresses critical market gaps by providing catalytic loans of $100k to $2 million to support small and growing businesses in the “missing middle”.
• Inclusive Finance, investing in microfinance institutions and other financial service providers that help low-income households gain access to credit, savings accounts, insurance, and business education. MCE provides loans of up to $4 million.

Internship start date and duration

• The intern should be able to start immediately, with a commitment of at least 3 months and the possibility of extension up to 6 months total.
• Minimum weekly hours: 10.

Job Functions

Support impact measurement and evaluation:
• Assist in the design, dissemination, and collection of MCE’s annual impact survey, interacting directly with microfinance institutions and small and growing businesses across Latin America, Sub- Saharan Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, and the Caucasus
• Conduct quantitative analysis of impact data to establish trends in the impact of MCE’s portfolio
• Collaborate with MCE’s Impact Analyst and Portfolio team to improve upon existing impact frameworks and methods of analysis

Support internal and external impact communication:
• Assist in the design and development of MCE’s annual impact report, including visual and graphic design, content-creation, and other related tasks
• Update impact data and case studies for marketing materials and website under the direction of MCE’s Impact Analyst.

Support impact analysis during due diligence:
• Participate in due diligence calls with potential investees alongside MCE’s Impact Analyst and members of the portfolio team.
• Assist in the impact analysis, writing, and preparation of investment memoranda for final Loan Committee review.

Skills/Qualifications/Experience

We are looking for a multifaceted individual with a “can do” attitude and a willingness to think outside the box, who is passionate about supporting high-impact businesses and addressing critical needs of underserved populations in developing countries. An ideal candidate will value the importance of impact measurement, evaluation, and communication in the impact investing process, and should be able to tackle a variety of analytical and creative tasks. Candidates should be able to work seamlessly across teams in a dynamic environment, have an entrepreneurial drive, a strong attention to detail, and pride in the quality of their work. Our approach to work, whether with colleagues, partners or clients, is cooperative.

In addition, the following qualifications are necessary:
• Bachelor’s degree complete, graduate degree in progress.
• Fluency in English.
• Strong knowledge of Excel and experience in quantitative data analysis and visualization.
• Strong writing and communication skills.
• Proactive and detail-oriented.
• Comfortable interacting with companies across geographies.
• Ideally two years of full-time work experience. Previous roles in the impact investing, social entrepreneurship, or international development sectors are a plus.

The following qualifications are desirable:
• Proficiency in Spanish and/or French.
• Experience with Adobe Suite, particularly Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop.
• Experience with Squarespace.
• Familiarity with the current discourse on impact measurement, evaluation, and management.
• Previous work experience on-the-ground in developing countries.

Compensation & Benefits:
$20 an hour
