Sauti is a mobile-based trade information and social accountability platform for SMEs engaged in cross-border trade in the East African Community. Our mission is to empower cross-border traders to exercise their rights as citizens of the EAC – able to trade legally, safely and profitably across borders and stand up for their rights with a loud and clear voice.
Our Internship Program provides recent graduates and graduate students each year with an unrivaled opportunity to learn about the internal mechanisms of a social enterprise and to experience life in the vibrant Nairobi startup community. Interns spend 6 months working across the company, serving in a variety of roles in our Nairobi offices and possibly in the field. Each intern reports directly to the Director of Operations. The internship application for our 2017 program is open to citizens of any of the members states of the East African Community (EAC). However, in exceptional circumstances, we are willing to discuss internships for graduates of universities outside the EAC.
Platform Maintenance & Customer Relations/User Outreach
Reviewing, editing and translating the Sauti platform between Swahili and English
Responding to users’ calls and queries and general management of the Sauti customer care line
Assist Field Manager in daily operations relating to maintenance of the platform, including, but not limited to updating information on the platform, sending airtime to users, sending market and border SMS alerts to users, following up with users on information submitted through the platform, performing basic analytics to help optimize user experience on the platform.
Track news and developments in EAC countries trade policies through government and EAC websites, news tracking and correspondence with our partners. Prepare updates and disseminate these through the platform and our social media.
Analyze data and track market trends for key commodities traded in the region. Prepare updates and disseminate these through the platform and our social media.
Coordinate meetings with external entities such as private, public and non-profit partners
Manage the exchange of correspondence in a professional and timely manner
Take notes at meetings
Assist in planning events and trainings
Work with Field Manager to prepare training, marketing and promotional materials and their translation into Swahili
Assist in the Sauti’s external communication, including development of blog posts and our monthly newsletter and management of our social media accounts and website.
Edit and draft correspondence letters, MOUs and contracts with Sauti’s implementing partners, service providers, and clients
Monitoring & Evaluation
Support project and business-related monitoring and evaluation, including assistance in development and administration of data collection tools, data aggregation and analysis and tracking of key business and social impact indicators.
Provide reliable analysis and projections for reports based on user data collected through surveys, feedback sessions and through the platform (e.g. using Excel)
Assist in research mapping out the traders’ user journey (user behavior, circumstances when the application is being used etc.)
Support the development of impact case stories through field research, data collection and user interviews
Participate in user experience prototyping and usability testing of the platform
Business Development & Finance
Provide research and analysis to support grant proposals
Assist in administrative and financial tasks where needed
Bachelors degree in business, economics or social sciences. Previous work experience combining field operations, business management, project management and communications within a private sector or a non-profit environment is an asset;
Computer literacy is a requirement, particularly with Microsoft Office (Word and Excel) and web apps;
Working knowledge of other computer skills such as WordPress, HTML, PowerPoint, and data management software are preferred, but not required;
Applicants should have an interest in the structure and process of mobile technology to create beneficial social impact;
The applicant should be ready to learn new methods and skills and have an interest in the organization and management of mobile platforms;
Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to converse with Sauti’s clients and user-base, field support questions, and engage with traders to provide optimum service delivery;
Ability to deal effectively and diplomatically with public institutions and Sauti’s partners;
A well-rounded individual and good self-starter, with a collaborative, adaptable and proactive working style; able to work independently, accept constructive feedback and accept a high level of responsibility;
Knowledge of the principles of financial accounting are an asset;
Language: English and Swahili are required. Understanding of Luganda beneficial.
Preference will be given to East African citizens.
We offer a monthly stipend that covers basic living expenses.
Nairobi, Kenya with travel within the region.
6 months, full-time, with flexible working hours.

Established in Kenya in 2016, Sauti Africa is an award-winning social enterprise that receives support from donors such as the EAC-GIZ Incubator for Integration and Development in East Africa (IIDEA), the HiiL Innovating Justice Accelerator, the London School of Economics (LSE), Palladium, D-Prize, and African Women In Technology (AWIT).
Through Sauti’s USSD-based platform, traders can access tailored information on border procedures and documentation requirements, receive an estimate of taxes and tariffs applicable to their products, as well as sign up to regular updates on recent changes to border procedures. Traders can access cross-border market information for commonly traded commodities and retrieve reliably sourced exchange rates. Traders can also use the platform to anonymously report incidents of bribery and harassment at border crossings. Reports crowdsourced through the platform will be escalated to appropriate government channels and used for the production of real-time reports, which are further utilized for evidence-based advocacy by SA civil society partners.
Over the next 3 years, Sauti plans to grow its presence across the East African region. By the end of 2017, Sauti plans to enter two more border posts on the Kenyan-Ugandan border, followed by Rwanda-Ugandan border expansion in early 2018. We need the help of an enterprising individual who can help us achieve these and other goals.
