We’re building technology to disrupt the way the social sector measures impact and we need your help. We’re looking for an experienced, resourceful full-stack developer who is driven to code for good. You’ve led or worked in a technical team in a tech company or start up, and have experience building, iterating, and launching tech products. You will join our fast-growing team in London and lead the development work
of our Lean Data SaaS tool.
Acumen is changing the way the world tackles poverty by investing in companies, leaders, and ideas. We invest patient capital in businesses whose products and services are enabling the poor to transform their lives. To date Acumen has invested more than $115 million in 113 companies across Africa, Latin America, South Asia, and the United States. We are also developing a global community of emerging leaders with the knowledge, skills and determination to create a more inclusive world. In 2015, Acumen was named one of Fast Company’s Top 10 Most Innovative Not-for-Profit Companies.
About Lean Data
Measuring impact in the social sector and impact investing space is a hot topic, but the status quo approach doesn’t always serve the poor. Academics, relatively separate from the markets and people they study, develop elaborate, costly studies that often take years to publish… Time is ticking. Lives and human potential are at stake.
Enter Lean Data. Using low-cost technology and methods, Lean Data gathers high-quality data quickly and efficiently, directly from end-customers. To date, Acumen uses Lean Data to measure the impact of all of its investments. Having validated the concept, in 2016, we began to expand. We now provide Lean Data to some of the world’s biggest foundations and social funds, including Omidyar Network, DFID, Injaro, SEDF, The Gates Foundation and more.
Now we’re ready to scale our operations. Imagine a platform that houses all of our data and makes it easy for social enterprises anywhere to gather, compare, analyse, and visualise customer feedback, and benchmark their social and business performance against peers. Now imagine building it from the ground up. You will lead the design and build of the technical infrastructure of the Lean Data’s SaaS platform. You will work directly with the Managing Director of Lean Data and the Lean Data Product Manager.
You will be expected to actively contribute to every stage in the product development life cycle and own the development of new features from conception to completion. You will have the opportunity to shape the future of our tech stack and be a powerful influence on the culture and the practices of our team. As the platform grows, we also expect to expand the team and build more capability in-house.
You’ll be working on:
+ Designing and building our database capabilities.
+ Creating front and back-end services for internal users and for the customer-facing Lean Data SaaS tool.
+ Building RESTful APIs and API integrations with external data collection partners.
+ Managing cloud-based infrastructure.
Some of the problems you’ll help solve are:
+ How to collect and aggregate data from different sources;
+ How to ensure the data we collect is stored logically and securely, and can be effectively interpreted, visualised, and benchmarked;
+ Automating the analysis of quantitative and qualitative data;
+ How to display insights in a clear and visually-appealing way.
Who you are
You have a keen interest in using technology for good. You believe in Lean Data’s mission to change the way the world measures social impact. You thrive in a fast-paced work environment where there is a clear goal, but some ambiguity in how to get there. You know what it takes to build successful products from scratch. You have the initiative and the drive to do what it takes to find solutions to a problem, and an interest in learning new languages and frameworks. More specifically, you have:
+ Experience in delivering products from planning through design, development, testing to release in production, in an iterative way, and working with Product Managers, Designers, and User Researchers (4 – 8 years of experience).
+ The ability to conduct technical and product discussions and make sound technical decisions.
+ Experience in database design and development.
+ A keen sense of customer focus; you enjoy solving problems and creating solutions to delight internal and external users.
+ Good experience with Ruby or another server-side language.
+ Experience with component-oriented JS applications using frameworks and libraries (e.g React, Redux, Webpack etc).
+ Experience with setting up and managing cloud infrastructure services.
+ An interest in agile practices such as continuous delivery, TDD, code reviews and retrospectives.
+ An interest in learning and improving technical, product and personal skills.
+ The ability to collaborate effectively with different colleagues and personalities, at all levels, and across a variety of functions and geographies.
It would also be great (but not essential) if you had the following:
+ A degree in Computer Science.
+ Interest in analytics and data visualisation.
+ An eye for user interface and interaction design.
+ Experience in building products for users with slow internet connections.
Additional characteristics we look for in all roles at Acumen:
+ Commitment to and enthusiasm for the organization’s mission to change the way the world tackles poverty, and respect for our core values: generosity, accountability, humility, audacity, listening, leadership, integrity and respect.
+ Ability to thrive when there is ambiguity, remain cool-headed when there are curve balls, and withstand the tests of a rapidly changing environment with resilience and resolve.
+ A sense of humor (really).
