Founded by a group of committed Kenyans, Lwala builds the capacity of rural communities to advance their own comprehensive well-being. We support communities to design, implement, and evaluate solutions to their most pressing health challenges. Then, we build coalitions of communities, health workers, government, and universities to generate evidence of impact and infuse these insights into the formal health system in Kenya and beyond. This bottom-up change promises holistic solutions that are custom-built for the systems they are meant to reform.

The Role

Lwala is growing our strategic partnership and grants management capacities to meet organizational needs and fundraising goals. In the last five years, we have grown from $1.3 million to over $8 million in annual revenue, with support from private foundations, technical health funders, and individual donors. In order to implement our ambitious 2025 Strategy, we expect to raise $50m over this 5-year period.

To support the organization in reaching this goal, we are hiring a Major Gifts Manager who will steward relationships with Lwala’s most committed supporters, cultivate new individual funding relationships, and lead the development and implementation of an endowment campaign. We are considering both full-time candidates and more senior candidates for a contract position. This role will report to Lwala’s Co-CEO based in Nashville.

Key Responsibilities

Individual Donor Engagement

Design and execute a major gifts and individual giving strategy and annual plans, including all cultivation, solicitation and stewardship activities
Design and execute a donor acquisition plan to expand individual donor base, with a focus on major gifts
Build relationships with current donors, especially those with capacity of $5,000 / year and above, including 5- to 6-figure gifts
Steward a portfolio of approximately 50 major donors
Meet with donors regularly, both virtually and in-person, as appropriate
Support engagement consultant on strategy and execution of direct mail, digital campaigns, and board fundraising plan
Work with engagement consultant to support a planned giving strategy and execution
Plan and execute fundraising events in Nashville and other cities as required
Plan and execute vision trips to Kenya

Endowment Campaign

Lead strategy and execution of an endowment campaign, aimed at sustainably financing Lwala Community Hospital
Form a committee of core supporters and major donors to steer the campaign
Lead a campaign study to assess capacity of existing portfolio, external prospects for support, and engage donor community in shaping campaign priorities, message, and strategy
Develop a case for support, and associated materials
Lead donor research, cultivation and solicitation
Work with steering committee to executive campaign operations and tracking

Qualifications and Experience Required

A bachelors degree or relevant experience in fundraising and development, masters degree preferred
5+ years of experience in nonprofit fundraising
Experience working in international development, global health or public health
Experience in major gifts strategy, endowment campaigns, and planned giving
Proven track record of raising funds from high-net-worth individuals
Exceptional written and oral communication skills, with proven ability to write persuasively and with a high degree of professionalism
Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to work with diverse constituencies
Superb research, planning, and organizational skills with a strong attention to detail
Excellent fact-checking and proofreading skills
Ability to work independently with minimal direction and under tight deadlines
Maturity to tolerate nuance, handle competing priorities, and advise executive-level leadership
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Google tools and a willingness to learn new software like Evernote, Dropbox, Salesforce, Kindful and WordPress
Ability to occasionally travel and work evening and weekend hours
