The past few years have been a time of phenomenal growth and development for Candide Group—we launched the Olamina Fund, a $40M debt vehicle creatively providing access to capital to women and communities of color, and also our non-profit arm, Real Money Moves, which has done significant advocacy work on various issues including immigrant rights and ending for-profit incarceration. We have significantly grown our team and community of investors. We have in that time tried to build HR, financial, and technology systems in a way that helps our people shine as much as possible and compliments our current stage of growth. We are now seeking a Managing Director to help us solidify, integrate and design strategy and systems not just for today, but for the future of Candide Group.

Responsibilities will fall in the following areas:

Strategy: MD, in conjunction with the Founding Partners, will play a key role in new program development and scenario planning for the future of Candide Group — essentially holding much of the future vision of the company. The MD will also manage an annual strategic planning process and monthly all-team strategic meetings, as well as working with outside consultants.

Human Resources and People-Ops: MD will serve as head of HR and improve upon existing management and support systems for all team members. This includes both attending to overall team culture, policies, well-being and happiness, as well as overseeing HR administration. This role also includes managing two direct reports.

Financial Management: Key person in designing and managing financial systems, while managing external resources (i.e. accountant), with a sharp eye towards conservative growth planning. Create and monitor budgets across the team and provide regular updates. Ensure team members receive timely and thoughtful financial insights into their work budgets and projects.

Compliance Management: MD will serve as Deputy Director of Compliance for Candide Group, assisting the Director of Compliance and working alongside a compliance firm and lawyer. This means facilitating monthly compliance checks, an annual program review, training and regulatory filings, and maintaining regular contact with the compliance firm around new initiatives and structures.

Technology Management: Chief designer and implementer of tech systems that will allow for improved team integration, project management, communication, cybersecurity and other systems, as needed.

The ideal candidate:

Has a mix of big-picture strategic thinking and the organizational, project management and people management skills to turn that vision into day-to-day reality. Equally excited to help set the direction of the company and to create, setup, and oversee the systems and tools to get us there.

Has a deep love of people, and takes joy in creating pathways for them to not only succeed in their roles, but feel fully supported and fulfilled as individuals. Comfortable navigating team dynamics, including: getting buy-in on projects, building deep relationships, giving/receiving honest feedback and holding difficult conversations, and managing outside service providers;

Loves systems, and knows how to integrate technology and people: comfort and experience in common systems and tools for project management, CRM, document management, etc.

Is comfortable with the can-do nature of a small company, and happy making their own coffee in the morning;

Is deeply committed to social change and to justice, equity, diversity and inclusion (a true JEDI), while knowing it takes organization, strategy and systems to achieve it;

Financial planning experience, speaks Excel fluently, and knows how to translate visions into financial models;

Knowledge of RIA rules and regulations, or experience navigating other highly regulated business environments

While comfort with people and project management is a must, investment experience is not — we highly encourage applications from candidates beyond impact investing and finance, especially those who have deep experience in non-profit or social enterprise management, developing internal systems, working in social movements and with diverse viewpoints.

Location: Oakland, California. Note that Candide Group typically operates two days a week as optional work from home, but is currently (as of June 2020) 100% remote due to shelter-in-place.

Compensation: $165,000-$185,000 – commensurate with experience. Additionally we offer standard benefits such as health insurance and an employer-contributed 401k.

About Candide Group:

Candide Group leverages capital to support the transition away from an extractive global economy to one that is built upon values of social justice and sustainability. We are a Registered Investment Adviser, registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission (“SEC”), based in Oakland, California, that supports families, foundations, athletes and cultural influencers nationally who want their money working for social justice.

As impact investors, we seek to foster social benefit alongside financial return. We recognize that achieving our values will require an intense reorganization of society, and thus the pursuit of multiple strategies — in addition to our core line of work pursuing transformative impact through investing, we also leverage traditional advocacy through active participation in activism campaigns, work with other organizations about how they can better align their money and values, and maintain a thriving presence in media to affect change. We prioritize intersectional and systemic change approaches, both amongst our portfolio and within our advocacy work. Candide Group supports investments across all sectors, geographies, asset classes and stages – including direct investments and funds; debt and equity — as long as we believe there is a strong impact intervention, a viable financial case, and a team with the skills to execute. Our team is majority women of color, and over half our portfolio is led by people of color and women — in general we have a strong commitment to equity and inclusion both within our team and the teams we invest in.
