Background Information

VillageReach is a non-profit global health innovator that develops, tests, implements and scales new solutions to critical health system challenges in low-resource environments, with an emphasis on strengthening the “last mile” of healthcare delivery. The Director/Senior Manager and Group Lead is responsible for managing the Private Sector Engagement Group (PSG) within VillageReach, providing oversight for the sourcing and application of private sector partnerships, capacities, and best practices within VillageReach programs. The successful candidate will be a person motivated by mission, by a highly dynamic and entrepreneurial environment, and by the understanding that his or her contribution can and will impact the success of VillageReach.

VillageReach’s current PSG efforts are focused on four core areas:
•Leveraging private sector services and markets to benefit last mile health systems (with a current focus on transport/logistics, communications, energy)
•Leveraging private sector models and best practices in our program work
•Enhancing private sector products/services for suitability in last mile environments
•Scaling innovations through private sector partnerships and models


The Director/Senior Manager and Group Lead will build VillageReach’s expertise and capabilities in our core private sector engagement practice areas. This person will be responsible for
•Review and revise VillageReach’s private sector engagement strategy, including developing key partnerships, identifying market opportunities, and reviewing VillageReach’s portfolio for high-impact opportunities for engaging private-sector skills and expertise;
•Manage and grow portfolio of engagements with private sector partners to enhance VillageReach’s last mile health systems strengthening program work;
•Build capacity by working with existing VillageReach staff and establishing and managing a high functioning team that may include external advisors or consultants;
•Work with VillageReach country offices to enhance existing private sector partnerships and foster new partnerships;
•Analyze complex health system needs in order to envision, architect and lead creation of new solutions and models that can strengthen access to quality health services at the last mile;
•Represent VillageReach and its approach to private sector engagement at public forums including conferences, meetings, technical working groups, and media and award events;
•Lead business case development for scaling current VillageReach innovations and investing in new opportunities; and,
•Cultivate VillageReach’s relationships with external organizations and coordinate across technical and business development requirements.


Experience and Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
•Passion for the VillageReach mission, including knowledge of global health and/or development communities;
•Recognized private sector domain expert for one of the following infrastructure areas (transport/logistics, communications, energy);
•Ability to use systems thinking to holistically understand a situation and then follow through with operationalizing a solution, building a business case, and developing the partnerships needed to implement;
•Experience evaluating new opportunities, building a business case, developing investment memos, and securing social venture capital or other investment-oriented revenue;
•Strong business development, consulting and project management experience and skills. Proven ability to meet deadlines and benchmarks;
•Proven written and verbal communication skill. Ability to assemble, distill, and analyze all necessary information for decision-making and presentations. Ability to present technical information coherently to lay audiences;
•Energy, intelligence, diplomacy, sound judgment, the ability to work independently, and the interpersonal skills to work effectively with VillageReach staff, partners and donors;
•Excellent people management skills, with demonstrated experience building and growing the skills and capacities of others;
•Ten to twenty years of relevant experience; (Prior relevant experience is a significant factor in determining whether the successful applicant will be hired at the Senior Manager or Director position level as defined in the VillageReach compensation structure.)
•Ability to travel internationally and domestically approximately 30% of time; and,
•Fluency in spoken and written English required.
•Advanced degrees in relevant fields (MBA, Econ, International Development) strongly preferred;
•Knowledge of international health issues and last mile infrastructure challenges; and,
•Experience managing projects in low-income countries strongly preferred.
