TICAH is a feminist organization that works to promote health, equitable relationships, and community action. It seeks to enhance the positive links between health and cultural knowledge, practices, beliefs and artistic expression. They believe that culture shapes health, that beauty is powerful, that expression is activism and that stories have something to teach.

Their work includes training and research in people’s rights to comprehensive sexual and reproductive health, publication and documentation to stimulate attention to grassroots solutions, advocacy on sexual and reproductive health and creative projects to raise their communal voices to affect national policy and programs.

With a team of 18, TICAH’s work has impacted over 120,000 people and with their MAMA Network program they have collaborated with over 35 grassroots organizations across 23 African countries.

TICAH’s sexuality program “Their Bodies, Their Choices” is aimed at encouraging more honest and healthy approaches to sexual life where rights and choices are respected. They do this by creating safe spaces for comprehensive sexuality education, producing informative and provocative sexuality curricula and facilitation guides for all ages, and conducting trainings and facilitating peer discussions reaching communities that include in-school and out-of-school girls and boys, people living with HIV, sex workers and women with disabilities. They also host a reproductive health hotline and advocate for better laws, policies and services.

TICAH is a leader in Sexual and Reproductive Health Advocacy in Kenya. They passionately work with like-minded organisations to advocate for comprehensive sexuality education (CSE) and safe abortion at the National, Regional and International spheres for legislation change and implementation on the ground. They designed an Advocacy in Practice (AiP) training that builds the capacity of young advocates to conduct effective SRHR advocacy. They work with legislators to build SRHR champions and lead social media advocacy campaigns.


About the role 

After working towards legislation and implementation of SRHR laws and policies for many years, they are creating this new Program Coordinator role to ensure that all their advocacy work is integrated, strategically approached, effectively implemented and well coordinated.

Your responsibilities will include the following:

Program and Grant Management – 20%

  • Manage TICAH programs and grants related to advocacy on sexuality issues
  • Create work plans and budgets to ensure they meet the objectives and timelines of each grant and program.
  • Ensure program deliverables are met by tracking work plans and coordinating program activities with colleagues and external partners.
  • Regularly track program budget and review expenditures in collaboration with the finance team. Contribute to program spending decisions.
  • Ensure grant reporting according to donor requirements by coordinating different contributions to the report across the team and drafting narratives for the report.
  • Be on the lookout for new funding opportunities. Develop proposals for new opportunities and for grant renewals in collaboration with the team.

Coordinate and implement TICAH’s influencing & advocacy function and activities – 60%

  • In collaboration with the sexuality team, integrate and build on their current approaches to create a strong strategy for their influencing and advocacy work around key SRHR topics including safe abortion and comprehensive sexuality education
  • Coordinate all advocacy activities across sexuality programs with colleagues and external partners and driving execution of all activities
  • Spearhead the development of materials for various audiences to communicate targeted SRHR related messages (IEC materials, training guides, op-eds)
  • Build new and deep existing relationships, partnerships and collaborations with other relevant players and organizations to enhance the reach and impact of their advocacy work
  • Oversee and drive implementation of the AiP program: Onboard and train young advocates, support them in designing strategic advocacy action plans, support them in implementation and onboard and manage relevant consultants to support the program
  • Spearhead building a network of champions of SRHR including journalists and legislators at National and County level by building relationships, driving relevant conversations, etc
  • Build TICAH’s advocacy capacity through benchmarking, learning, researching widely
  • Spearhead advocacy campaigns on important days that are marked in the calendar
  • In collaboration with the M&E manager, develop indicators and tools for the advocacy area and support the different stakeholders in implementing the tools to measure, evaluate and learn

Coordinate Communications of their sexuality programs – 20%

  • Liaise with the Director of Communications to ensure effective documentation of sexuality program success stories and lessons learned in the monthly newsletters and annual reports.
  • Ensure visibility of TICAH’s sexuality work and ensure implementation of the sexuality communications strategy (stakeholder mapping, key messages) by coming up with a content schedule for their various channels (blog, social media, newsletter, annual report).
  • Coordinate the team on writing content in line with the content schedule. Where needed, support team or edit content to bring out messaging strongly.
  • Ensure they have a strong database of materials about their work and cause, including photos, images, videos and stories.


Who they are looking for

  • You have a deep passion for sexual and reproductive health rights and believe that women are free to make their own choices in SRHR.
  • You have at least 5 years of experience in running sexual & reproductive health programs, with a track record of juggling multiple projects or programs at a time.
  • You have strong project management and coordination skills: creation and tracking of work plans, budget tracking, donor reporting, monitoring & evaluation
  • You are well versed with advocacy strategies and methodologies and have been involved in designing strategies and action plans for advocacy efforts.
  • You have been part of successful advocacy processes and campaigns in the SRHR field, targeting decision makers, with the aim of changing legislation or pushing for implementation of laws.
  • You know how to drive impactful conversations with decision makers towards influencing policy and budgets.
  • You have knowledge of the current state of SRHR legislation and the implementation of these laws in Kenya. Knowledge in the recent history of SRHR advocacy is an added advantage.
  • You are persistent yet adaptable: You are not easily discouraged when things don’t work out as planned. When difficulties come up, you spot opportunities and adjust your approach creatively.
  • You know how to coordinate with and leverage partners and external stakeholders to achieve joint outcomes. You enjoy working with and building the capacity of others in advocacy efforts.
  • You have strong writing skills and have a track record in drafting strong narrative reports, IEC materials, letters etc.
