Launched in 2008, BCtA is a global membership platform that encourages private sector companies to develop innovative business models that combine profitability with development impact, in support of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The Business Call to Action is a unique multilateral alliance between key donor governments including the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), UK Department for International Development, and the United Nations Development Programme — which hosts the secretariat.

BCtA members are market leaders and innovators, committed to developing commercially viable business ventures that engage people living at the Base of the Economic Pyramid (BoP) as consumers, producers, suppliers, and distributors of goods and services. In more than 68 countries, business leaders are spearheading efforts to provide the poor with the tools and resources they need to succeed by promoting economic opportunity. BCtA provides a leadership platform for companies to demonstrate their commitment to development and to access global expertise on innovation at the BoP.

Reporting to the Director of the Istanbul International Center for Private Sector in Development, the BCtA Programme Manager will be responsible for ensuring the effective and efficient execution of the BCtA Initiative. S/He will be responsible for the management and operation of the BCtA Initiative including delivery of results; human resources management and procurement, work planning, and fund and budget management; for managing support to the governance of the Initiative; engaging stakeholders and facilitating linkages between existing members and stakeholders; resource mobilization, including mobilizing inclusive business commitments from private sector companies.

The work of BCtA is part of the Finance Sector Hub being launched by UNDP in 2019; which is conceptualized as a finance and innovation platform that draws on a critical mass of UNDP expertise, initiatives, and partnerships to support the mobilization and leveraging of resources for the SDGs and lead the implementation of the new private sector strategy and other initiatives. The Hub will be an integral part of both the Bureau for Policy and Programme Support (BPPS) and the Bureau of External Relations and Advocacy (BERA), as part of the Global Policy Network (GPN). The vision of UNDP’s GPN is to become the cutting-edge provider of development advice, instantly connecting countries to the world of knowledge, resources and networks of best practice they need to achieve development breakthroughs. A key area for this work is SDG financing and investment.
