Kiva’s Review and Translation Program leverages the power of 400+ volunteers to edit, translate, and review loan descriptions that come in from the field before they are published on the Kiva website. Using a self-assignment platform created and maintained by Kiva, these global volunteers handle upwards of 14,000 loan descriptions every month. Supporting the volunteers, maintaining Kiva’s loan review guidelines, and continuing to scale the program as Kiva grows are the challenges of the Review and Translation Program staff. Now is an exciting time to join the program, as we are planning to release cool new tools to better support our volunteers.
As the ideal Review and Translation Associate, you believe that words have the power to change the world. Proficient in Spanish, you are ready to become a training powerhouse, selecting and training new volunteers to translate Kiva borrowers’ stories into English for publication on Kiva’s website. You thrive in the world of online communication, whether you’re bonding with a volunteer over a cultural tidbit, putting your virtual heads together to research an obscure term, or sussing out issues that challenge your problem-solving abilities. You’re detail-oriented and work well on your own, but you’re at home in a collaborative team.
Responsibilities may include:
a. Loan review and Team Leader management
*Monitor unreviewed loan volume and motivate teams to translate/review required volume
*Manage review of special case Kiva Field Partners
*Manage up to 10 Loan Review Team Leaders (corresponds to team of 250+ volunteers)
*Support Team Leader responses to volunteer queries on loan policy, Kiva processes, translation techniques, terminology, and volunteer involvement
*Coordinate recruitment of a class of up to 20 Team Leaders once a year
*Lead initial Team Leader trainings, along with other Review & Translation Program staff
*Manage format for quarterly conference calls and lead quarterly one-on-one calls with Team Leaders
*Provide technical support for Kiva systems to Team Leaders
*Participate in planning for volunteer and Team Leader coverage for the holiday season
b. Translator recruitment, testing, and onboarding
*Build on recruitment network to increase flow of volunteers for specific language needs
*Screen translator applications and manage recruitment and screening messages in Kiva systems
*Manage language test evaluation process
*Manage onboarding process for translation volunteers, including accepted, rejected, and wait listed applicants
c. Volunteer support, linguistic standards, and community engagement
*Develop volunteer resources and provide technical support for Kiva’s review and translation systems
*Monitor industry practices in linguistic technology, crowdsourcing, and translation and collaborate in program scaling
*Plan and coordinate volunteer recognition events, work parties, and trainings
Required Skills and Qualifications:
*Native or native-equivalent English speaker with proficiency in Spanish
*2+ years professional experience in translation, localization, volunteer management, project management, or a related field
*Excellent people skills with friendly and motivational communication style
*Adept with new technologies
*Creative problem-solver who is interested in innovation and enjoys a high-growth environment
*Knowledge of more than one Kiva language (Spanish, Portuguese, French, Russian)
*Established network within translation/localization industry
*Certificate or degree in translation
*Experience managing volunteers or remote teams
