The Senior Insights Manager will work in partnership with the current Senior Insights Manager who is also based in London, as well as other members of the team based in London and in region. The role will report to the Research & Insights Director. Travelling is expected as approximately 10-15% of the role.
The Senior Insights Manager carry out the following activities. In some projects, the Senior Insights Manager will lead with support from their peers, and in others they will provide review and support to peers. The Senior Insights Manager will be expected to be able to produce high quality insights with a high level of autonomy, and guidance from the Insights & Research Director.
Use sector expertise to identify the key data points required to demonstrate development impact and commercial sustainability (for the mobile industry and utility service providers).
Work with the market engagement team (based regionally and managing our portfolio our grants) to secure these data, or other members of the team or the broader GSMA.
Collect evidence though desk-based research, calls with internal and external stakeholders, and where relevant field visits
Identify and shape research topics based on industry gaps and GSMA’s ability to fill these or work with partners
Select and manage consultants hired to support larger research projects
Support the tracking of key industry data points to monitor the growth of the sector (e.g. investment), and the opportunity (e.g. addressable market)
Content Development aimed at the development industry, the mobile industry and utility service providers:
Thematic insight reports, including the programme annual report that cover trends across mobile enabled energy, water and sanitation
Grantee case studies or periodic grantee content (blog, video or other) with support from the market engagement managers
Toolkits or eLearning content for utility service providers or mobile operators
Contribution to reports by the broader GSMA and external publications that include references to our programme’s work and expertise
Presentations for speaking engagements (GSMA events and external events)
Insights and dissemination:
Dissemination of the created content in close collaboration with the programme marketing manager and leveraging online (social media etc.) and offline (printed reports etc.)
Participate in selected industry events to represent the programme, share insights content, and build stakeholder relationships.
Lead workshops with mobile operators and/or start-ups operating in the utility space to walk them through relevant content
Creation – in collaboration with the marketing manager – of different formats for a single insight piece (infographic, video, webinar, podcast etc.)
Interaction with external researchers and sector stakeholders to push content to external publications
Identify opportunities to share programme content with the broader GSMA.
Other activities include:
Support the development of agendas for internal and external events such as the Mobile 360 series and grantee workshops.
Work with other M4D programmes to support cross-sector insights initiatives e.g. on the role of mobile-enabled utility services in humanitarian contexts.
Contribute towards shaping the overall strategic direction / course correction of M4D Utilities, to ensure that the programme delivers value to the industry and achieves its goal of creating more scalable and sustainable business models for energy, water and sanitation service provision.
A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree
At least 5 years of prior professional work experience in a role relevant to this position
Experience in the utilities sector (e.g. PAYG energy, water or sanitation) is essential.
Experience in the mobile industry particular mobile money is required
Experience in ICT4D is a strong plus
Strong analytical background with experience in market intelligence & insight writing in the aforementioned sectors
An understanding of research framework design in emerging market contexts
Strong analytical skills: fluent in Excel and, able to manipulate large quantities of data and be able to present the results of analysis in a succinct manner to key stakeholders
Excellent communicator: ability to write well in non-academic style & present complex technical, commercial or regulatory issues in plain language, without losing the important points; ability to develop visual communication of insights in powerpoint, content for infographics
Research: ability to develop research questions, methodology, framework
Comfortable managing relationships with various internal and external stakeholders, including C-level executives and dedicated entrepreneurs
A team player, being able to effectively connect together a wide group of internal GSMA interests and resources, to lead on work and support others in theirs
Fluent and compelling written and oral communications skills in English; other languages – French in particular – a plus.
Naturally curious, and genuinely interested in both the commercial and social benefits that are presented by the programme
Excellent cultural awareness and a desire to work with teams around the world.
