Founded in 2013, NationSwell helps purpose-driven leaders and organizations take their impact to the next level. NationSwell is a certified B Corp, which means how they do business is inextricably linked to their mission and impact. The NationSwell Studio is the nation’s leading social impact studio. As part of the NationSwell ecosystem, the Studio is embedded in a unique community of purpose-driven leaders and experts, and they are committed to helping their partners take their impact to the next level through strategy, storytelling and audience engagement. Their sweet spot is distilling complex social issues into compelling human stories, moving influential audiences to action and centering impacted communities in all that they do. Clients include progressive corporations, leading philanthropies, and cutting edge nonprofits, such as AARP, Einhorn Collaborative, Greater Good Science Center, The Mission Continues, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Samsung NEXT, Schultz Family Foundation, Starbucks, TENT, and Toyota.
NationSwell is seeking a Strategy Director to join the NationSwell Studio team to develop, deliver and implement innovative strategies, frameworks, events, campaigns, and collaborations – all with impact at the forefront. You will be the powerhouse of delivering strategy, think: developing an impact plan for a global foundation, researching best-in-class CSR programs for a cutting-edge corporation, or developing a content series on impactful communities.
The Strategy Director role is rooted in the ability to understand organizational and community needs and translate them into action for a diverse array of partners. You will be equally comfortable getting “in the weeds” of projects as you are delivering a presentation to the C-Suite of an organization. Ultimately, you are a passionate problem solver who is both a self-starter and a team player.
What will you do?
Develop the strategic frameworks for projects, ensuring the work is optimized to create social impact and meet the goals of their partners.
Act as a key relationship builder & trusted advisor to partners (aka clients), confidently navigating ambiguity and bumps in the road, responding nimbly to needs as they arise, and making clear recommendations on smart ways to achieve goals.
Act as a guide and partner for their Creative and Accounts teams, keeping outputs on-brief and helping everyone understand the “why” behind everything they create.
Lead the research phase of projects to deeply understand the subject they’re working on and translate that knowledge into insights and strategy for impactful work.
Coach Studio team members on strategic thinking, encouraging intellectual curiosity and rigor in decision making during projects.
Contribute to and sometimes lead the creation of new business proposals, spotting and sensitively responding to requests (both incoming requests and organic growth opportunities), collaboratively pulling together budgets, and showcasing NationSwell’s work in the most relevant and compelling way.
Help proactively innovate the Studio’s strategic approach and offer in a way that responds to market need, centers inclusivity, leverages their unique assets, and applies commercial rigor to their approach.
Grow and work with a small team of strategists, project managers and creatives.
What are you like?
Successful candidates will:
Have experience bringing strategic visions to life at a nonprofit, foundation or social impact company or have worked in consulting at a creative/strategic/design agency.
You may have led a CSR team within a business, led strategy within a foundation, worked at an agency on impact accounts, or led a team within a nonprofit organization — they are open to a range of prior work experience provided you have the right skills to respond to partner needs and be both a thinker and a doer (running research & insights, creating presentations, coordinating teams etc.).
Thrive working on multiple projects at once – you can easily integrate into a new project and switch modes between deep ‘heads down’ work and client facing meetings.
Know how to create deliverables – whether a notes document to capture a conversation or a presentation to senior partners, you can confidently and nimbly create partner-ready deliverables that are rigorous and compelling, telling a story and making clear recommendations.
Enjoy leading partner/client meetings and facilitating workshops — you are a good listener, confident in driving things forward, comfortable with responding and adapting in real time.
Proactive and forward-thinking — not waiting to be asked to do tasks but always thinking ahead and stepping up to move things forward, suggesting solutions to challenges.
Have an innate curiosity – you enjoy working with and interfacing with many different types of people and organizations and are always asking questions to learn more.
Be comfortable leading a project from start (visioning) to finish (executing).
Enjoy working collaboratively and cross-functionally.
Experience working in social impact or in a consulting role shaping & leading strategic endeavors, including: designing and deploying research (quantitative and qualitative), workshop design and facilitation, strategic synthesis and recommendations, creating and delivering presentations
Experience directing teams — you’ve taken responsibility for thinking through resources needed, planning a project, delivering key outputs and client delight
Strong communications skills (oral, written) & ability to create deliverables (presentations, white papers, research synthesis)
Understands the principles of human-centered design
