About Jacaranda Health
Jacaranda is designing the future of maternity care in East Africa for the patients who need it most. Our hospital is changing the way maternal healthcare is provided by developing better ways to provide high-quality, patient-centered maternity care at low cost. Currently, our hospitals sees over 2,000 clients a month, and we are partnering with eight government hospitals to refine a model for improving quality of maternal healthcare in the public sector. Jacaranda is committed to producing high quality evidence and is building its capacity as a center for implementation science research in maternal and newborn health care. We have built strong partnerships conducted rigorous implementation science research with partners such as Harvard University, the Duke Global Health Institute, and UCSF Global Health Sciences. We have won global and local recognition, including from the Center for Health Market Innovations, the Gates Foundation, Savings Lives at Birth, and Innovations in Healthcare – and our facilities have been independently rated as among the highest quality in Kenya. Jacaranda Health is in an exciting stage of growth, and looking for Summer Associates to work with our project teams during the summer of 2017. We seek exceptional candidates who are enthusiastic about working in a start-up environment on the cutting edge of global health and implementation science. The work program will be tailored to the associate, and we are open to candidates with backgrounds. Several potential projects include:
Research design and analysis: work with our group prenatal care projects or nurse obstetric champions project on qualitative and quantitative data management, cost analysis,strengthening recruiting mechanisms, .
mHealth and data tools: help design or manage mhealth interventions to improve clinician decision-making, client communication and behavior-change. Some of our projects: WhatsApp for virtual pregnancy groups, sms and web forms for postnatal checklist, and nudge behaviors around postpartum family planning.
Clinical programs: for medical professionals, there is the opportunity to work with our project teams as they design protocols and build our innovations around quality of care — from nurse training, to clinical dashboards, to sonography protocols.
New services and business lines: Help us evaluate and launch new lines of business to leverage our innovations and expand our impact — licensing, training academies, such as emergency transport, insurance products, or pediatric care.
Patient-centered design and customer analysis: Use the human-centered design tools of IDEO and other global design firms to help us understand our patients’ needs, design our clinic spaces, and improve client and nurse interactions. There may also be an opportunity to help analyzing client data and revisiting our customer segmentation.
Nairobi is an incredibly exciting place to work – a bustling economy and a global hotspot for social entrepreneurship and research. We have a dynamic cross-cultural team in our clinics and main office. Recent graduates could also convert this into a longer-term fellowship opportunity.
Current student in a top-tier MPH or MBA or healthcare program, or someone with 3-5 years professional experience and an interest in global health
Highly resourceful, independent, and self-starting
Flexible and easy-going enough to work in a fluid, cross-cultural startup environment in Nairobi
Ability to communicate findings compellingly to colleagues and advisors
Desired: experience working in East Africa or a similar setting
First-hand experience building a health venture
Learn about maternity experience and clinical challenges faced by low-income mothers in peri-urban areas
