About +Acumen
Our +Acumen team is building the world’s school for social change – a global learning community for social change-makers. +Acumen is an initiative that started in 2013 with the vision of equipping thousands of passionate people with the tools, insights and community to step up and create change.  We do this in two ways:

+ We offer free and low-cost online courses that help to democratize access to the best tools to change systems which keep people entrenched in poverty
+ We find the “best” people and connect them to Acumen and each other at scale

To date +Acumen has reached 400,000 people from 192 countries through its courses. +Acumen also manages various in-person networks – such as chapters, alumni, and course volunteers – that allow our broader course community to get more involved in supporting Acumen and each other.

Where You Come In
+Acumen has historically run a range of online learning experiences across different platforms. But now, we’re starting to reimagine our user experience and merge our online learning experiences with our in-person regional Fellowship experience. To do this, we need to create an entirely new website with a whole new user experience including: new merchandising of our content, a new user onboarding process, a new user account creation process, etc. As our first design hire, you will partner with our Product Manager to dive into the strategy, design, planning and development of this new website and foundational user experiences. You’ll work closely with our product manager and small tech team to perform initial discovery, map user journeys, develop a project plan, complete site and content information architecture, create wireframes, design pixel-perfect high fidelity mockups, and collaborate with engineering to implement experiments and designs.

More specifically, you will:
+ Complete discovery for the design of this new website: gain a deep understanding of the needs of our users and internal stakeholders, drawing upon user research that has already been documented by our team and collecting qualitative and quantitative data to address gaps in understanding to generate new insights of your own
+ Work with the Product Manager to contribute design related activities to our project plan that ensures design aligns with the rest of the product roadmap for the website redesign
+ Create the complete information architecture and sitemap of new site
+ Create redesigned pages via the product development life cycle as your guide, including generating multiple concepts using interaction design, conducting usability testing and ideally providing visual design recommendations.
+ Solve complex user problems and quickly ideate solutions delivering user journeys, task flows, mockups, wireframes, and high-fidelity prototypes
+ Prepare A/B tests, analyze results, synthesize feedback, share with the team, implement learnings

Who You Are:
+ You’re a user-obsessed designer who is always asking, “Who is this for? What will they use it for? What value will it provide?”
+ You’re an experienced strategist who asks the right questions, sees the big picture, and isn’t afraid to get their hands dirty with project plans and timelines
+ You are a strong storyteller who can clearly communicate design choices and defend design decisions to all stakeholders
+ You are highly collaborative with an ability to work cross-functionally within a small, scrappy team
+ You are comfortable working with ambiguity and when requirements are still in flux
+ You love experiments and aren’t afraid to learn new things while making mistakes

Preferred Qualifications:
+ 4-6 years of experience in strategic design & UX design for web and mobile
+ Strong proficiency with Sketch, InVision and other standard UX tools as necessary
+ Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud (specifically, Photoshop and Illustrator)
+ Proficiency with user research (translating insights into actionable design deliverables) and familiarity with usability testing
+ Portfolio showcasing projects that demonstrate your problem solving process as well as design solutions
+ Experience working in Lean and/or Agile development environments
+ Permanently authorized to work in the US

+Experience working in online education or non-profit environment
Proficiency with HTML, CSS, SASS, or LESS
+ Basic understanding of Javascript

Additional characteristics we look for in all roles at Acumen:
+ Commitment to and enthusiasm for the organization’s mission to change the way the world tackles poverty, and respect for our core values: generosity, accountability, humility, audacity, listening, leadership, integrity and respect
+ Ability to thrive when there is ambiguity, remain cool-headed when there are curve balls, and withstand the tests of a rapidly changing environment with resilience and resolve
+ A sense of humor (really)

20-30 hours a week, 3 month initial contract with high potential to extend through completion of redesign

Acumen offers a healthy, nonprofit compensation package.
