The Center for Financial Inclusion (CFI) is an independent think tank housed at Accion that works to better serve, protect and empower clients.
CFI has long been at the forefront of the consumer protection movement. In 2009, CFI founded the SMART Campaign—which has served as a platform for engaging with providers on improved consumer protection practices, resulted in the development of industry standards, and created an ecosystem of players that support providers to uphold these standards in practice. Over the past several years, CFI has shifted its research focus to better understand the risks faced by consumers and market players in a digitized world, updated the Client Protection Principles to reflect emerging risks and standards to ensure providers can effectively respond, and provided concrete guidance for regulators to better take into account new risks.
CFI is deepening its program on consumer protection in the digital world to focus on:
Addressing the most critical consumer risks (COVID-19 and beyond)—by conducting research and mapping on COVID-19 related risks- and developing the concept of protection by design.
Leveraging technology innovations to strengthen market monitoring—by developing SupTech innovations to improve market conduct supervision and consumer protection, strengthening market monitoring of risks to consumers linked to COVID-19, and strengthening strategic partnerships.
Exploring ways in which new providers, such as fintechs and platforms, can be influenced to prioritize responsible consumer protection practices.
Accion is a global nonprofit committed to creating a financially inclusive world, with a pioneering legacy in microfinance and fintech impact investing. We catalyze financial service providers to deliver high-quality, affordable solutions at scale for the three billion people who are left out of — or poorly served by — the financial sector. For nearly 60 years, Accion has helped tens of millions of people through our work with more than 160 partners in 55 countries. More at http://www.accion.org.
