Tanzania will be second country in East Africa after Uganda to undertake rural and peri-urban electrification project in a move aimed at developing the country’s rural access to electricity and information technology services.
The project, Energising Rural Transformation (ERT) which has also been undertaken in Uganda under the World Bank is estimated to cost around $80 million.
The project is expected to take off next year.
Mr Theophil Bwakea, Deputy Commissioner of Energy in the Ministry of Energy and Minerals told The EastAfrican last week that the government will make the first 75,000 connections in the rural and peri-urban area.
Mr Bwakea said in the second phase of the project the other 125,000 connections would be made to be followed by 200,000 connections in public and private sector partnership electrification investments.
