IDA to Help Improve Irrigation System in Pakistan

The World Bank’s concessional lending arm is providing $250 million to help improve water and agricultural productivity in the Pakistani province of Punjab.
The funding will be used mainly for the renovation of the province’s irrigation system. It will also support the implementation of reforms necessary to improve water allocation and efficiency in the province. These activities are covered by the first phase of the Punjab Irrigated Agriculture Productivity Improvement Program, which the International Development Association’s loan will help finance, the Business Recorder reports.
The initiative’s key objectives are to help increase agriculture production, incomes and employment in Punjab and to contribute to higher living standards and favorable environmental outcomes.
The project will be managed by Punjab’s Directorate General Agriculture – Water Management office, with technical assistance form the World Bank.
