Scaling innovative products and services to solve huge challenges in Kenya’s agriculture sector
Nairobi- Kenya, July 22, 2014: GrowthAfrica – East Africa’s premier impact accelerator is pleased to announce that it’s supporting 12 Kenyan social enterprises after a successful agribusiness incubator in Q 1 of 2014.
The 2014 GrowthAfrica Agribusiness accelerator – a Bestseller funded programme seeks to expand the reach of innovative products and services to low-income small holder farmers, big agribusinesses and key actors in different value chains in agriculture.
For the next 18 weeks, the start-up teams will get the chance to interact with their peers, to work with experienced facilitators, and a carefully selected group of successful mentors, network with key industry players and access to investors at the annual GrowthAfrica venture forum.
“The GrowthAfrica agribusiness accelerator has particular focus on growing their business operations and scaling the social and financial impact,” said Patricia Jumi, the Managing Director of GrowthAfrica. “This is really an impressive cohort of ambitious Kenyan entrepreneurs solving challenges across the country and East Africa.
Agriculture is the backbone of our country and provides livelihood, employment and generates income for over 75 % of the Kenyan population. The sector is among the key drivers envisaged to deliver the 10% annual economic growth stipulated in the Economic Pillar of Vision 2030.
Currently, agriculture directly represents 26% of the GDP and another 25 % indirectly through its linkages with manufacturing, distribution and service industries in Kenya. However there are challenges faced by small holders and large agribusinesses that require sustainable solutions to realize the full potential of Kenya’s agricultural resources.
GrowthAfrica strategically accelerates high-impact, high-growth businesses that innovatively contribute to Africa’s social and economic progress in different sectors through acceleration activities, strategic advice and access to investments.
