Monday, May 14, 2012

Five African social innovators have been included in the World Economic Forum’s list of Social Entrepreneurs of the Year 2012. The awards were announced at the Ethiopian summit of the WEF by Klaus Schwab, founder and Executive Chairman of WEF.

Hilde Schwab, chairperson and co-founder of the Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship said: “Social entrepreneurs use innovative approaches to extend access to healthcare, education, energy and housing to marginalised populations that may not otherwise be included in the traditional markets. They ensure that growth, such as that experienced in Africa is and will be inclusive.”

The five winners include Bethlehem Tilahun Alemu, who is the co-founder and managing director of SoleRebels. This unique social enterprise leverages the artisan heritage of Ethiopia to develop stylish, sustainable and eco-friendly footwear for the global market. The enterprise provides employment opportunity and training to hundreds of underprivileged African workers, and makes use of environment friendly business practices.
