U.S. private equity firm TPG and U2 star Bono’s announcement earlier this week that they have created a new organization for measuring the social and environmental returns of investments appears to be a signal of growing investor demand for tools to assess impact.

Y Analytics, a private benefit corporation (meaning it legally can do good as well as deliver returns to shareholders) is being spun out of The Rise Fund, a $2 billion impact investing fund managed by TPG Growth and the social impact advisory firm Bridgespan Group. Bono is a co-founder alongside several well-known philanthropists, including Jeff Skoll, former president of eBay.

The analytical platform that’s at the core of this new company rests on decades of impact measurement and management research conducted through the broader impact investing community.
