CHILD SAFEGUARDING:  
Level 2:  the role holder will have contact with children and/or young people either frequently (e.g. once a week or more) or intensively (e.g. four days in one month or more or overnight) because he/she works in country programs; or is visiting country programs; or because he/she is responsible for implementing the police checking/vetting process staff.
Role Purpose 

The Media and Communication Manager works to deliver vital information and communications products that enables excellent communication, media, advocacy and fundraising activities for the country programme donors, Save the Children Members and the cross Save the Children International.

The Media and Communication Manager will supports on the internal information management and the preparation of communication outputs that ensures the timely dissemination information internally and externally.

The Media and Communication Manager leads on engaging the national media in South Sudan to raise the profile of the organization’s work and properties in-country. He engage the international media by preparing media materials and organizing in-country visits.

The Media and Communication Manager works with the program teams on communication materials for program use such as videos, flipcharts, posters and other IEC and BCC materials.

In this role, the post holder moves projects forward within the country support.

Develop High Profile for Save the Children

  • Updates Country office communication materials including fact sheets and briefing papers for different stakeholders
  • Supports in updating social media platforms including workplace
  • Facilitates communication visits by Save the Children Members, freelancer’s photographers/film makers and external stakeholders such as journalists to program sites.
  • Maintains quality or external productions focusing on content, layout and design as well as branding
  • Supports the country office staff in identification, documenting and drafting of stories, best practice and lessons learned, share with external audiences, and deliver appropriate communication training and support as requested/necessary
  • Undertakes the field visits to collect high quality case studies, photographs and films as requested by the Country Office members or other external stakeholders.

Programme Support and Information Management 

  • Leads information and communication flows between emergency responses and a variety of internal and external stakeholders (including situation reports, dashboards, and trackers).
  • Produces accurate, clear and consistent information and communication outputs relating to emergency situation and Save the Children’s emergency response – including key messages, Q&A’s and factsheets.
  • Ensure that results from case study collection are fed back into response team & planning.

Communications, Fundraising, Advocacy   

  • Collaborates with advocacy and policy colleagues to ensure core messaging is consistent with advocacy and policy strategies within a response and opportunities are explored to promote these strategies.
  • Undertakes photography commissions to a high standard, to accompany compelling case studies in collaboration with the CO Media/Comms team.
  • Facilitates photograph and film commissions/freelancers, and produce/deliver creative. Liaise closely with CO Media/Comms team to ensure coordination of photography/film commissions are managed appropriately on the ground and that assets are shared quickly and also stored within a programme.
  • Ensures that multimedia commissions are fundraising-appropriate for key member markets, and speaks to Save the Children’s brand.
  • Social media: lead innovative communications to reach wider audiences and directly engage supporters in our work.

Mange Media Events 

  • Identify media opportunities for national and international media.
  • Draft statements, speeches, and responses to media queries and press releases to national media.
  • Develops and maintains contacts with key print and electronic media (including radio, TV, news websites and blogs) to supply them with newsworthy materials about SCI’s work in the country.
  • Organize press trips when required to see development results or actions taken by Save the Children.
  • Organizes press conferences and press briefings when required for strategic communications.
  • Handles reputational risk issues including drafting statements and responding to requests for information.
  • Collaborate with advocacy colleagues to ensure core messaging is consistent with advocacy strategies within a response and opportunities are explored to promote these strategies.
  • Act as a focal point for the Save the Children Humanitarian Media  and Communication in the country office.

Capacity Building

  • Train and capacity build other response team members as spokespeople, and on how to generate media and communication contents at field level.

Behavior Change Communication

  • Advise the country office and field teams to develop IEC and BCC materials for use.
  • Advice field teams on effective means to deliver information to children, beneficiaries, government and other stakeholders, including the use of videos, radio and other media, which can be accessed to children or people with low literacy levels or from different language groups
  • Engage and advise on potential materials and methods of communication from improved accountability to children in Save the Children programmes.
  • Commission radio/Tv talk shows and other production materials that can be used to meet programme objectives in the field.

General

  • Deliver results in line with the terms of reference agreed in advance.
  • Comply with Save the Children policies and practice with respect to child safeguarding, code of conduct, health and safety, equal opportunities and other relevant policies and procedures.
