Program Overview for Energy
The objective of the WRI India energy program is to inform and guide India’s transition to cleaner energy through strong research, ground-level implementation experience, partnerships with key stakeholders and communicating our work. The 5 pillars of the energy program focus on increasing clean energy demand, increasing clean energy supply, supporting sub-national energy transitions, raising the issues of materials and circularity for the energy transition and ensuring equitable development through energy transitions.
Job Highlight
This position sits within the Energy Minerals and Circularity pillar, which focuses on strengthening India’s preparedness for clean energy material requirements, advancing circularity, and improving sustainability across mineral and component supply chains critical to the clean energy transition. The Senior Research Analyst will lead and support analytical work on critical mineral supply chains, including qualitative and quantitative assessment, trade analysis, and environmental sustainability evaluations. The role demands strong research capabilities, comfort with mixed-methods inquiry, and the ability to convert research into high-quality knowledge products. The candidate must be able to work under guidance while delivering timely, rigorous outputs.
What will you do:
1. Research and Knowledge Generation (60%)
Conduct detailed qualitative and quantitative research on supply chains and trade flows of critical minerals essential for India’s clean energy transition.
Undertake structured literature reviews and synthesize complex information into clear, actionable insights.
Lead or support primary and secondary data collection, data cleaning, organization, and analysis.
Analyse datasets relevant to mineral supply chains, technology components, and trade patterns.
Convert research into well-crafted knowledge products including reports, working papers, policy briefs, strategy notes, op-eds, and/or journal articles.
Contribute to conceptual frameworks and analytical models for assessing minerals and technology sustainability.
2. Stakeholder Engagement (20%)
Support engagement with external partners including government agencies, industry actors, research institutions, inter-alia.
Represent the team and present research findings in national and international forums, workshops, and conferences as required.
3. Project Management and Coordination (20%)
Assist in managing project workflows, timelines, and deliverables.
Support planning and execution of stakeholder meetings, roundtables, consultations, and dissemination events.
Contribute to the preparation of project reports, presentations, articles, and communication materials.
What will you need:
Education:
Master’s degree in Environmental Engineering or an equivalent field (mandatory).
Additional certifications in trade analysis, supply chain assessment, or related areas are preferred. Candidates with interdisciplinary training or specialized qualifications in mineral supply chains, technology components, or sustainability analysis are encouraged to apply.
Experience:
4–5 years of research experience in think tanks, academia, industry, or government, focused on supply chain assessments of critical minerals. Experience with trade analysis of minerals or clean-technology components is preferred.
Knowledge of rare-earth magnets used in wind turbines and electric vehicles, and familiarity with components of clean energy technologies, is an advantage.
Evidence of published or forthcoming research (reports, working papers, articles) on trade or supply chain assessment will strengthen the application.
Skills and Competencies:
Strong analytical and quantitative skills, with the ability to interpret data, develop insights, and generate practical recommendations.
Excellent writing, communication, and presentation skills.
Proficiency in MS Office tools.
Ability to manage multiple tasks and work across technologies and sustainability themes.
Demonstrated commitment to high-quality research, strong work ethic, and a sense of responsibility.
Enthusiasm for learning, collaboration, and ability to thrive in a mission-driven research environment with a strong commitment to WRI India’s values.
Potential Salary and Benefits: 14,00,000 to 18,00,000 INR CTC Per Annum
Salary shall be commensurate with experience and skills. WRI India offers a generous and comprehensive benefits package.
