Analysis: The Currency More Valuable Than Crypto: Trust

By Charles E. Owubah

Elon Musk recently captured headlines with a tweet suggesting he would sell Tesla stock to fund hunger relief to the tune of $6 billion. His comment was well timed to resonate: Just weeks before my organization released survey data showing that 86% of Americans say global hunger remains a serious problem.

It seemed like a perfect match: Americans concerned about rising hunger and Musk positioned to make a meaningful difference. But there was a catch — one familiar to most in the nonprofit sector. Musk wanted evidence to show that the amount discussed would “solve world hunger.”

People were watching. Musk’s tweets move crypto valuations and, in this case, put one of the world’s largest humanitarian organizations in the spotlight, challenged to respond. It was a question of trust, which has implications for our sector as a whole.
