MRC Injects R10M Into Fight Against Life Threatening Health Conditions

Monday, January 30, 2017

CAPE TOWN- The Medical Research Council (MRC) has put up R10 million to boost the development of medical technology and programmes focused on the reduction of life-threatening health conditions in Sub-Saharan Africa. Specific emphasis will be placed maternal and child health care.

The move will see prominent development and research agencies collaborate to address health related challenges. The council says research indicates that more than half of global maternal deaths and over three quarters of neonatal deaths occur in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The council’s Zoleka Ngcete says this will be addressed by a collaboration with the African Academy of
Sciences and NEPAD’s Accelerating Excellence in Science in Africa. She says it will also help eradicate other health challenges that impact on maternal healthcare.

“We are launching this new fund to assist Africa to come up with its own solutions.” South African researchers in particular have been urged to form partnerships with research teams in other African countries.
